Me first. The first time when I watched JOJO, I hated it because of its masculine style and strange black lines on character's face . But after I watched 3 episodes, I was attracted by main characters' bravery and interesting plots, and JOJO became one of my favorite animes. What about you?

One Piece immediately comes to mind for me. I had a friend or two singing its praises way back when, but I found the goofy, cartoony artstyle to be an instant massive turn-off. Even the character names and terminology seemed silly to me. ("So wait, this kid is named...Monkey?") When the big news broke that Funimation was taking over the series, I tuned into the Toonami airing of the first episode of the new dub...not because I had any real desire to watch the series, but more out of curiosity over how they'd handle it. Fast-forward over 15 years later, and I'm now 1100 episodes and counting into the series and hold it as one of the greatest stories I've ever experienced. Funny how quickly opinions can change.

Mirai Nikki/Future Diary
Cause I mean... during that time, I was only into "Manga-Only" phase for new anime and when I did see like the art, I was pretty much like "Eh. It doesn't look too serious or complicated". I was into rewatching the whole Gundam series and rediscovering the Flame of Recca via manga (cause I didn't know the plot was different from the anime) and GetBackers (same with this).
But when my then partner wanted to watch it, I watched it too (cause I didn't have a choice then LOL). And my mind went
It was my first like bloody/graphic anime (I didn't know Berserk then). I was like "Is this how anime is now???", "Why does it look complicated that it seem?", "THE HECK WITH THE YANDARE?"
And then yeah. LOL. That whole day, I was able to finish the whole Mirai Nikki series. And it also, legit, changed my view on anime.

Thank you for your heartfelt comment. I have never watched one piece before, but one of my friend keeps praising it, as yours. And he likes the character with green hair and scar on the face, Saron, maybe? And I think loving an anime for 15 years is such a cool thing.

Yes I think Gundam and Flame of Recca are animes so long ago, and it must be surprising when you see animes of high image clarity
BTW do you like yandare? It's really an unprecedented character, like, ten years ago.

I seriously thought that Flame of Recca manga ended the same way as how the anime ended. It felt very abrupt and the story doesn't feel done. So when I read the manga, I was mindblown why it never became an anime at all, like the very plot! Flame of Recca was super good!
Ten years ago, I found the yandere to be fascinating cause it was my first Yandere character I encountered! But thinking about it now, I'm like Nah man. I wouldn't want a real life Yandere. They are toxic

A case of definitely reading a book by it's cover effect happened with Berserk (1997 version of course). Just the imagery was too Westernized, overly masculine looking like an ultra gritty version of Dragonball. I decided to watch it because something about it reminded me of Bastard!!, which at first discouraged me because of the visual presentation but ended up loving it. I really like how both shows are hyperviolent but at the same time really has some epic levels of tearjerking and emotional storylines, plus beautiful, detailed animation that perfectly complement the philosophical depth present.

100% YES. That happened to me as well with Berserk! It became a core memory for me when I also started reading it during a sleepless night.. and well.. it ended up me reading everything for two days (even while I was doing my errands and chores) with no sleep

The character you're referring to is named Roronoa Zoro (or just Zoro as he's commonly called).
As for me while I wouldn't say hated I was originally put off by the first episode of Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor but I decided to watch the second episode to see how it played out. I'm glad I did as I ended up really enjoying the show from then on and have since rewatched it multiple times. It's also what convinced me to not immediately judge or write off an entire series based on one bad episode, especially if it's the first one, as most times it's just an outlier and the exception not the rule.

One that immediately comes to mind for me is Solty Rei. I initially thought it was just copy/paste of other similar storylines from that period. I would say by episode 3 I was interested and by the halfway point I was very invested in it and seeing how it would play out. Another one from that time period that pops into my mind is Saiyuki. I didn't find it funny or interesting at first, and I had seen enough Journey to the West adaptations. The characters though started to grow on me and I started to really appreciate it's take of the old tale. I wasn't happy when it changed studios and VA cast, but that's not the show's fault.

There would be a few examples for things I thought the first episode was weak but the rest of the episode count was great, but rather than that I could mention something I initiallly dropped, then picked back up to continue and ended up liking it
I'm not sure why or what switch got flipped inside me but Shirobako felt entirely cynical about production and miserable to watch when I first tried it while it aired, so I dropped it 5 episodes in. Long time later I continued it and really liked what I saw, both character-wise thinking Miyamori was great and the technical specifics the episodes went into, and especially the passion shown from all different sides when it comes to making anime. It's been so far the only anime I dropped and picked back up that I can actually say I liked, every other of my attempts ends up being a drop again or stuff that I finish but thought it was just mediocre or average. Since I never rewatched the first 5 episodes I don't know if I would still have a problem with them or if it was just a mood thing

Ugh, the Saiyuki series by Kazuya Minekura is a great adaptation of the Journey to the West imo, but the sad thing about it is that it's also one of those, not-done manga due to the mangaka's health.
I really loved that series. The JP VAs were still the same up until the Saiyuki Reload Blast but it's still ugh -- not done.

I'm glad you also got enjoyment out of that title and sorry for the sleepless nights. Not that it matters but I want to clarify I was only talking about the anime series. I didn't read manga for either title, I was just making an analogy between book covers and the idea of disliking something at first sight.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
I didn't think it would be my cup of tea. However, after watching it from start to finish, I found myself completely engrossed.... ))

This happens to me once or twice a year on average, but maybe the all-time biggest case of this for me is The Garden of Sinners. Not until its seventh installment - which brings everything prior to it together - did I truly and fully appreciate what the movie series was doing, thus elevating to Masterpiece status in my book. Prior to that point I was kinda blase about the whole thing even while acknowledging that it looked and sounded great.
