Pretty reasonable response under the circumstances.

It is unfortunate when the boundary between fantasy and reality breaks down. It is a very touchy area where people struggle to recognise those boundary area's. And conflict erupts between art, entertainment and the harm caused to very real people.

One thing I have discussed between geeky friends is the benefits in early exposure to both fantasy literature and DnD. Where you can teach young people the difference between creating a story and real life, of being in character vs real life.

He's said what he needed to say. That's pretty unequivocal, particularly by Japanese standards. Credit where it's due etc.

Questions about separating the creator from the creation are always difficult. In this case, my instinct is to say that Shinkai is the driving creative force, so the works in question remain "untainted". But there's a nasty question bobbing in the back of my mind about royalties.

The producer is just the money man - as you said, Shinkai is the driving creative force. I have a copy of Your Name purchased shortly after it became available on DVD, so I most likely already gave cash to the producer, sadly. But I can at least watch it again without giving him anymore, and enjoy the work of the people who made the film.

I wonder if there is a way to pry any payments away from someone, or if they even still get them long after the film was released?

Generally speaking, no. There is little likelihood that a contract for royalties (assuming he is due any) would contain a morality clause for a producer. Also unlikely that such a contract would have any claw-back provisions for past earnings. And it is usually not plausible for someone to have their contract earnings clawed back for actions that take place after or otherwise separate from the work they were contracted to do (again, unless there is specific contract language to allow it). A company is certainly able to try, but it's unlikely that a court is going to allow for that to take place - essentially enforce contract terms the parties never negotiated. It's a tricky situation to navigate, but unfortunately there's unlikely a lot that can be done directly. They could always try to sue for damages under a theory that this has caused harm to the brand or reputation, but that would, at this point, be hard to do and be little different (in terms of effect and in terms of required evidence) from the attempts at invalidating the contract itself. The biggest hit this guy can receive right now is going to be suit by the victims, and/or loss of present and future work. Past earnings are otherwise likley off limits.

Sad he had to comment on this at all, but I saw people insinuating he was in on it with Itou so no doubt this should hopefully put those rumors to rest.

I believe such insinuations, if any, could be interpreted differently. Makoto himself, in that tweet the article is referencing, said he was aware assumptions and social media could be generating backlash about him. Acknowledging rumors exist is better than fooling yourself they can be "put to rest."

I continue to be exceptionally curious about how this came to light during an unrelated prostitution investigation. I just can't think of very many circumstances under which that would be a possible result. We'll probably never get an answer, either.

You (and everybody else) don't need to know because it's really none of your business. I don't think Shinkai had to say anything thing about it but he did because he felt that he needed to quash any rumors that some gossipers might have started spreading. Such is the sad state of the world we live in these days.

Sad but true. The internet, especially social media, love to jump on bandwagons like this until someone who isn't the offender suffers. Be it a friend not in the know, the offender's family, or even the people arguing with each other on Social Media (or the mods forced to deal with the BS that comes from it).

Way I see it, while he didn't have to, in this climate where people love to play the blame game, troll and harass people who don't deserve it and send death threats to any and everyone that offends the accuser(s) like it's deeply personal to them. Shinkai's totally justified by speaking up.
