I'm guessing that they will consider the value of what you had in your account, and credit you with the equivalent of X number of months of a free Crunchyroll subscription. So for those who bothered to redeem the digital codes, at least it'll be something.

The only way you got these digital copies was by buying the physical DVD or Blu-Ray. So yeah might want to look into things before you make an *** of yourself. In this case by saying you should always buy physical media, when you only get these digital copies when you buy their physical counterpart.

As to how Crunchyroll will reimburse owners of digital copies I only see it only going 1 way, and that is account credit for their monthly or yearly subscription.

They won't ship them a new DVD or Blu-Ray because the already own it. Crunchyroll is not going to give them a new digital copy because they don't do that, and it would take years to even implement a system like Funimation had for digital copies. Finally there is not really anything else that would be universal enough to satisfy the majority of people that are losing this perk.

Using my own collection as a reference with the digital copies I own, the only difference is a difference that Funimation and Crunchyroll has always had. That being Funimation would always replace their broadcast sub/dubs with the release sub/dubs when the physical DVD or Blu-Ray went on sale. Crunchyroll does not do this, so if for some reason I lost, had scratched discs, or ect. . . I could always go to the Funimation website to watch the release version of a show that I already owned without a subscription.

So yeah there is really nothing but subscripts that Crunchyroll can handout to people to reimburse them for losing backup access to the release version of shows. Thankfully this is an anime fandom issue, instead of a video game 1. I shudder when I imagine what EA, Ubisoft, or Activision would do in this situation. Mostly visions of in game currency you buy with real cash, an assortment of Loot Boxes, and credit for Pay to View episodes (if these companies were in the anime business) bullshit.

I'll be curious to see what that "appropriate value" is. The digital codes came with physical copies, and the pricing was the same with it, so there wasn't a specific monetary value at the time. On the other hand, it is something that came with the purchase, so people did pay for it the same way they did for blu-ray and DVD back when combo-packs were still a thing. Just because you primarily used one version doesn't mean there was no value to the other.

Personally, the way they've handled those digital codes never sat right with me. I tried using them, only to get an account error because I had a subscription, so it counted as already having access. You didn't get a download, you got access to a streaming version of one title. It took years, but I expected that it meant that eventually people would lose access because it was all service based.

The only appropriate value would be access to the download the movies. That is what people paid for. Calling this a "Bonus" to dvd/bluray purchases is disingenuous because it was literally an advertised reason to BUY the dvd/blurays. It's not a "bonus". It's something we paid for.

Just gimme a buyee gift card for the nichijou digital copy I stole off someone's Mercari listing or something idk. Crunchyroll store sucks and I don't want a Crunchyroll sub.

Can we please open up a topic for how crunchyroll killing Rightstufanime.com in favor of their own worse, more expensive store was one of the biggest blows to buying physical media for the anime industry in the west?

Not talking about ANN or readers here specifically, but in general I feel like so many people are missing this point (which tbf is stated in the article). I'm not one to defend CR's business practices and yeah it does suck, but this isn't like buying a movie off Amazon or Apple (or a game digitally) and erasing it. Everyone who had a digital library got their digital copies only through buying a blu-ray release. These codes were also never really something you saw people selling through third-party sites, maybe at most you'd give away to friends if they didn't already have a Funi subscription at the time? And I don't think its disingenuous to say it was a bonus, iirc they had zero affect on prices. It was just a way to advertise and get more people to check out and hopefully eventually use their streaming service.

I only ever used it a handful of times: if I was traveling and wanted to watch something that wasn't already streaming, which were usually co-licenses that used to be shared between CR and Funi, but then were split up following the end of that partnership (i.e. the dubs for Ancient Magus Bride, 91 Days, etc... were not on Funi nor CR for a good while).

I have to admit that I never saw the point of redeeming a digital copy for something I already owned a physical copy of so I never did. I still think Crunchyroll should pay me... oh, I dunno... about a 100k or so for... for... um... pain and mental suffering and stuff?

While I don't have a personal stake in the Funimation/Crunchyroll transition, I do eye it worryingly, as a view of things to come.

While I always try to get a physical copy of the anime I love, I have doubled dipped with the Amazon Prime Video digital shows, mainly for convenience sake. So if Amazon falls, (which seems unlikely, but you never know), their loss won't hurt too much.

But this always brings up the argument of "BUY" and "RENT" with regards to digital copies. Those two terms are really self-explanatory and that is my view of things. But for our digital overlords this seems to be a gray area, especially with the term "BUY". Somehow the word "BUY" might just mean, a long term rental.

It bothers me how some of my digital downloads, somehow disappear, requiring me to download them again to my devices, like season one of Tanya the Evil.

Your digital copies that you buy are not supposed to turn into vaporware, and the promised 'some form of refund' won't cure or replace the loss.

Crunchyroll has recently started to sell digital copies of new simulcast shows via Amazon but I assume it's too much work to add all these past shows to Amazon.

Yeah, this whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. Nobody is totally losing access to anything.
