That and will also be accused that it promotes Stockholm Syndrome.
I would not worry about it. There is always something people will find to argue.

It's a pity really as the "Slave" bit is essentially meaningless, It's been a while since i read the LNs but other than as the explanation of how they meet i don't remember it being relevant in the slightest.

American twitter is offended by everything so that’s not shocking.

I mean if its meaningless why have there at all? There are plenty of fictional ways to bind forcibly bind two people together doesn't involve a defacto dehumanizing concept. If you gonna toss slavery into your work you at least deal ramifications of it. It like having a woman rape in a novel and acting like she severely effected by it.

After he buys her Zagan's first goal is to free her from the enchanted slave collar. So he's a lot more anti slavery than most protags.

This is one of the light novels I follow. Hopefully it's a good adaptation but it's hard to say, first part of the visual looks good, not so the other half...
Personally, I don't have any problem with themes like slavery, or in this case her growing closer while 'nominally' under captivity. I just think it comes with the territory of fiction. If I enjoy it, I read it. Or watch it..

As a reader of the novel i would say the slave part is barely revelant past vol 1, I don't remember much polemic with Sugar Apple's slave focalisation which was much more present than most fantasy LN i read which aso feature this subject, so i don't see why this one should suffer from that. Most of the novel is sugar-ish slice of life with some actions to diversify once in a while, it's pretty much this season's Ikenaikyo with others characters.

I notice people choose when to get outrage about the topic of slavery in anime..for example like you mentioned sugar apple fairy tale and no one threw a fit about that but people went ballistic on Mushoko Tensei.

... but the point of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale was that she wanted to free him, not abuse her power over him, and she wanted to let him make his own choices, and so forth? Of course there was very little complaint about that. There were moments where Anne made some creepy choices (imo, anyway; in particular, putting her pride before the overriding goal of freeing/rescuing people), but they were generally subtle and not points of emphasis; the stuff at the forefront of the show was 100% "Here's our positively framed protagonist and her perfectly natural grossed-out reaction to the subjugation of a sentient race." The issue has never been "Slavery is terrible to write about; never use it in stories". It has always been about how it is written about.

Compared to the spinoff focusing on Barbaros and Chastel this one is simply dull and for me fell off a cliff after they adopted the dragon-girl.

Slavery it's a way to kickstart the plot, I have the feeling the author added it for merchandising purposes as "It's popular so, there goes".
It's also quite efficient history telling, since Zagan is shown as an apathetic guy, freeing Nephy becomes his drive/goal, it also gives him a reason to become a Demon Lord and attain the power to break the slave contract.
Thus, you create a reason for the 2 to stick together long enough for them to fall in love, gives the apathetic MC a goal, advances the plot and kickstarts the main conflict all with one plot point.
And, since it was just a narrative tool, once it does what its supposed to do it's discarded.
The only question that I have is that there is a secondary romance that has its own spinoff, if the anime doesn't show these scenarios and it advances enough to show them together it's gonna feel it came from nowhere.

In the original work Barbaros basically only shows up when Zagan is alone and the starting point for the spinoff is in the middle of everything and runs parallel (but really not) with the main story and doesn't really affect it. I doubt the anime will adapt enough material for it to even be a potential problem.

Once again, most fantasy/isekai stories should have a disclaimer before they premier
"Disclaimer: [Insert Series] contains depictions of slavery that are not conductive with real world events. [insert Series] does not depict slavery in a realistic way, nor does it call out slavery as a societal failing in need of immediate correction. [Insert Series] utilizes slavery as a way to introduce the main characters to each other and for no other purpose and the issue of slavery will rarely (if ever) be brought up again. [Insert series] recognizes that any character introduced through slavery could be introduced by being an orphan on the street or by other means and it would carry the same character weight. [Insert series] hopes you will enjoy all the other aspects of its world and not dwell on this one topic that even this series doesn't dwell on long. Thank you."
This could apply to like 10 different anime in the last couple of seasons.
