Now that I think about it, has Tezuka ever done an isekai series? There's reincarnation in Phoenix but it's handled differently than in isekai stories, plus there's not really other worlds being traveled across, just time and space. Apollo's Song could fit, but it's tenuous. If Tezuka managed to live into the 1990s, would he come up with an isekai shoujo manga to compete with CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth? Why did my brain even land on that thought?

I came here to say 2018 Dororo is truly great (with maybe 2 seconds of QUALITY) and is a good version to watch first. If it's the only Dororo you will ever see, just as fine.

I feel like this is a Captain Obvious statement to anyone familiar with the sketches he drew. Have you taken a good look at some of the nengajo he produced? The ones he drew for adults feature very sexualized imagery of women/animal hybrids showing detailed genitalia, particularly the ones he drew for the Year of the Rat and Year of the Tiger. In short, he was a pervy old man when he didn't have to draw images for mass (children) consumption.

When you get out of his standard stuff and take a look a MU, Ayaka, or Ode to Kirihito you get into some more mature themes too. I do think the media always sells this idea of him being this clean child friendly story guy and most people won't look beyond that so I get why Urasawa would feel the need to say that.

Kind of surprised you guys didn’t mention Justin’s Buried Treasure on the Rintaro-directed Phoenix: Karma. It’s absurdly good, and every Discotek Day I keep hoping they’re going to announce it as their next big acquisition.

Mmmaybe Unico? The basic conceit is that Unico is constantly taken to new worlds since the gods are jealous of his ability to spread happiness, and every time he manages to make friends and/or bring happiness to others in a new world, he's taken away to another one and his memories of whatever adventures he had before are wiped.

I considered Unico, but didn't know enough about that series to be sure. That may be a good fit.

I will actually read the remake first, and probably never read the original. I have a strong disdain for stories that do not end, usually because ending the story = the end of profits. Osamu never finished Unico, and likely never planned to.
