Byaku's hair color does match up with the color he's depicted with in a small color illustration from volume 5.

Might it be a manga≠novel-situation? Is it not a plotpoint in the novel that he's the same as her?

Sorry should have clarified, the illustration is from volume 5 of the LN. Yes it is odd though, as it doesn't match the way I recall the story describes him... but illustrations not fully matching the text's description of a character isn't that rare either, especially when hair color is involved.
