Quote: | No, Hololive VTuber Ouro Kronii wasn't responsible for busting the lid on an embezzlement scheme at Nexon related to the gacha game Blue Archive. But gacha gamers still bust the lid on an embezzlement scheme at Nexon related to the gacha game Blue Archive, following a decision to rate the game 18+ for no apparent reason. Shiravune claims that "Steam's review made it impossible to pass while keeping the core appeal and high standards we hold for these titles." It should be noted Dungeon Travelers 2 saw a mainstream release on the PS Vita.
To the consternation of many AQUAPLUS fans, Shiravune's releases of Dungeon Travelers 2/2-2 have been refused by Steam for sale on the website. |
Should the Shiravune stuff in the Blue Archive blurb go with the Dungeon Travelers blurb?
Also AI delenda est.

Man, I was sure the Dept Heaven games were long dead and left to rot. Did not expect to see a remaster. I've only played one personally- PSP's Gungnir - and despite it being one of the more "normal" games in the series (it mostly plays like a standard srpg,) it still had its share of oddities. This wasn't just in the gameplay though; the narrative was odd. It felt almost like a part 1 of its own miniseries. It ended inconclusively, larger setting elements are just dropped, and very little seems to have changed in the setting or characters between picking the game up and seeing credits roll. Still nothing on the oddness of Knights in the Nightmare, though.
AI voice tech in general is one of the ever-growing list of tools that I think are really interesting, and with potentially really cool benefits...but that we are, as an aggregate, utterly unwilling to use responsibly of ethically. I don't know that you can put the genie back in the proverbial bottle though. And I'm unsure just how effective legal redress will end up being, long-term. Lots of concern, little in the way of answers.

I hope the Clock Tower port is of the PlayStation version which had extra content. It's also nice to hear it'll be more like "River City Girls Zero" aka Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka in that it's just the original game with their own cover art or added stuff and not a complete remake.

If they didn't regulate Photoshop then AI isn't going to be any different. Or to put it another way, if nobody cares about important political figures like Trump, Obama, and Biden being photoshopped, deepfaked, and AI voiced, they're not going to care about cartoon voice actors. There's not really any way to regulate AI that doesn't hit fan-creations in general. Parody clause protects them all. Just like that old edited deepfake of Obama kicking open a door after a press-conference that's like 12 years old at this point.
I can get people not liking it, but there's nothing really you can do about it. The Futaba thing blew up because the actress made a huge deal out of it and naturally the Streisand Effect happened. The best course of action is probably just to ignore it and not let people know it bothers you.

No matter what anyone says, the Internet has never worked off of "Just ignore the trolls". B3cause why would they stop if their goal is to profit off of people's likenesses if nobody actually puts up barriers? You're implying Erica directed the harassment to herself, which is very crappy of you.

The explanation for Amakusa's depiction in Samurai Shodown is almost assuredly "the devs read Yamada Fuutarou's smash hit Makai Tenshou or watched one of the movie versions." Fighting games from that era cribbed from other media all the time, like Vega/M. Bison/Dictator's design being swiped straight from Teito Monogatari.

...Except that regulating the scraping and data usage necessary to train ML models is absolutely possible and wouldn't affect manual creation of fan works in any way. The biggest obstacle is that tech companies will fight tooth and nail against any kind of data regulation.

The other day I saw a screenshot of TikTok commenters asking for an AI Billy Kametz. Evil stuff.

The PSP version of Yggdra Union was improved from the GBA version. So is this release another improved version of the GBA or does it include those PSP improvements as well?

I don't actually know if the Switch/eShop versions are based off of the PSP version, but they have their own extensive updates so I imagine that they likely build off of what the PSP version offered.

While image rights dominated the coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike, I’m pretty sure voice protections will also be key demands of the union, as well as an ability to protect their voices from AI impersonation.

I am unreasonably happy to see Tomba appearing in a headline in the year 2023. I first discovered it on a demo compilation disc that came with our PS1, and the weird little game about the pink-haired caveman kid and the evil pigs left enough of an impression on me that I wound up buying it. What Jean-Karlo didn't mention is that in addition to the fun 2.5D platforming, the game included some pseudo-RPG elements as well: there was a whole quest system and inventory that awarded points, and there was also some sort of leveling system for killing enemies that did...something I can't remember, it's been a really long time. Point being that it was a blast. The sequel wasn't nearly as good, and I mostly remember it for some truly QUALITY voice acting, but even then it had this cool feature where if you had a save file from the first game on your memory card, a few characters would reappear and give you some bonus quests. Long story short, it's great to see the game reappear on modern systems. Totally picking this up on Steam as soon as I can.
So I was scrolling through the column, and the name Rose and Camellia meant absolutely nothing to me...but then I read the description and had a sudden realization. "Holy crap, it's that crazy slapping thing from Addicting Games!" Not exactly something I was expecting to think about again in this lifetime. Now where's our remastered Nanaca Crash?
And I'm not sure that intentionally making a game in the style of "those CD-i Zelda games you couldn't pay me enough to play" is the best move ever, but kudos for effort at least, especially going so far as to get the original voice actors back.

So just skipping the bad stuff like with Lindbeck (if you're taking the AI bros' side, you're just plain wrong) and MS (this is not going to go well for the industry and considering Zenimax came under fire just this week I expect nothing to improve at ActiBlizz) and going to more interesting things.
Lots of Limited Run stuff; cool to see Tomba! getting a revival and Tokuro Fujiwara had been working to get the rights figured out for years.
Clock Tower is also a huge one, especially since it's not only getting a new intro it's even getting theme song from good old Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, America's Atsuko Tanaka. And funny mentioning how much it takes from Phenomena considering just last Friday I was watching Perfect Blue on The Last Drive-In. And during that, it was brought up how it's almost like an anime giallo flick and that got me thinking how much Italian horror (especially Dario Argento0 has influenced Japanese creators. Clock Tower is obviously an homage and Metroid producer Yoshio Sakamoto has said how his favorite film is Dario Argento's Deep Red and that Argento's storytelling influenced his own while writing the Famicom Detective Club games. Definitely something I'd like someone to do a deep dive on as you can see it in other Japanese media.
Anyway, keep up the good work, FinalVentCard

Did we need to know about this anecdote?
Especially when no one would’ve minded had the physics not been correct.

Happy anniversary!
Regarding the AI voice stuff, specifically the Elder Scrolls mods:
So I've been using mods for Skyrim for *years*, and I remember distinctly how excited I was to come across a mod that let you change the player voice to Lucina from Fire Emblem: Awakening. As far as I can tell, some of the lines are from the game, but some of them are custom, like "Fuz", "Roh", and "Dah". And in the days before Cameo, I think I would have been okay with splicing syllables to get custom lines for mod characters, which is kinda' the predecessor to AI voice-scraping--it probably wasn't easy to get ahold of a voice actor nearly a decade ago, let alone hire them for a handful of lines in a kinda' grey area of gaming.
But Cameo does exist now, and it's easier than ever to contact voice actors. (And it doesn't even have to be through Cameo; the same actress who voiced Lucina contacted a modder via Discord for a separate Skyrim mod.) Modding already operates on a kind of honor system of not stealing people's work and trying your absolute damnedest to contact original owners prior to minor things like reuploads for new game versions, and now that it's comparatively easy to hire voice actors for mods, there's no real justification not to extend that same honor system to the voice actors themselves. Not to mention, it's not the end of your mod if you can't implement voice acting. Would it be ideal? Sure. But there are very common and reliable workarounds that provide subtitles for voiceless characters with lines. There are absolutely alternatives that don't involve going against a voice actor's wishes.

I would argue yes, exactly because no one would have minded if the physics had been wrong.
Someone staying late to work on horse testicles reacting to weather shows a) a staggering attention to detail and b) an even more staggering skewing of priorities in favor of realism at the cost of the employees. That level of attention to detail only comes with Studio Ghibli everyone-sleeps-at-their-desk-and-no-one-goes-home levels of human effort, and it's all for a tiny animation. I seriously doubt "horse balls shrinking in cold weather" was on any fan's wish list for a Red Dead Redemption sequel, but someone decided it was important enough to make a developer work late to make it happen, which makes it quite clear that they felt long (very long, going by the horror stories of RDR2's development) hours were an acceptable cost of doing a minor point of business.

The embezzlement scheme wasn't at Nexon, it was at GRAC, Korea's games ratings board.

On the AI stuff, I want to point out that the United States DoD has been reported to be experimenting with Large Language Models. And so are many other key players in geopolitics, like China and Russia.
There's no pretending this is going to stop, not while every civil experiments have possible military and espionage applications. There is no longer any sort of ethics for what can or cannot be done. It's an AI arms race now and that's why I don't think there's gonna be much regulation on companies. And methods. Because this is not about making voice actors act in porn mods for Skyrim or having Neco Arc sing Construção by Chico Buarque. This is about ten years from now, when the USA and China are fighting over control of the Asia-Pacific, when fake videos and fake conversations are being employed to convince the population that it's ok to send an AI controlled hypersonic cruise missile against Shenzhen on a AI planned mission that's been planned based on drone-provided data.
It's awful and immoral but it's the world we live in.
