So is this a single day of showings in the US or a regular addition to US theaters for 2 or 3 weeks?

I remember plenty of fans being doubtful that it would release in the US without trailers, but here we are, a week from release without US trailers...

It’s hard to say. It has to have a 7-day theatrical run in California by December 31 to be eligible, and even just a sub-only release in only Los Angeles would probably qualify. I’m not so sure GKids would consider rushing it out though for the 2023 awards though.

It's Ghibli so I doubt they'll wait long to give it a worldwide release along with a dub. I'm actually shocked it doesn't have a simultaneous worldwide release along with Japan.

In a very Ghibli-esque move, the legendary anime house is asking fans to go see the film with no preconceptions: "Deep down, I think this is what moviegoers latently desire," says producer Toshio Suzuki.

The forthcoming film, which opens in Japan on July 14, is easily the most anticipated movie coming to Japanese theaters in years — and exceedingly little is known about it.

And the studio released one inscrutable poster for the film in December, but it has said nothing else about the movie since — no plot summary, no voice cast, nothing about the film’s setting or characters. In an interview with Japanese magazine Bungei Shunji on Friday, Ghibli’s longtime lead producer Toshio Suzuki, considered Miyazaki’s right-hand man, said nothing more will be revealed about the film before it hits theaters.

Movies looking for Best Picture consideration will need an “expanded theatrical run”

Earlier today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made it official: Best Picture nominees must receive an actual theatrical run. To qualify for the 2023 race, contenders must fulfill an “expanded theatrical run” in “10 of the top 50 U.S. markets.” By expanding the rules, the Academy is essentially forcing every studio and streamer to play the same game and put movies in theaters around the country rather than a couple of screens in New York City and Los Angeles.
