Uhh I mean, you drive 15 minutes north in Washington DC from the waterfront and you'll end up in neighborhoods where shootings are a bit of a constant. So if this is the kind of stuff ANN is going to report on...you'll likely be working overtime during Okakon...

As noted in the article, the key difference is that Little Tokyo is a destination for many Anime Expo attendees. Some events are held in Little Tokyo during the July 4th weekend, timed specifically for Anime Expo.

I noticed. I'm more curious if ANN is going to be doing this for every single CON every time there is a crime in the general vicinity. For example. DC is a small city, one block can be safer than the next. If you go out during Otakon you'll likely go to 14th and U...and there is at least one violent crime in the vicinity per week (and that is on a good week!).

But whatever, I get why it was reported.

I tend to agree that crime in the vicinity of the LACC or related venues during AX, while possibly ANN newsworthy, are hardly novel occurrences that LA citizens in the area have to contend with daily and have for the last decade or more. ANN never mentioned such before to my memory and so the question of "why now?" is fair.

Maybe they always should have been.

Also, maybe they did before, but Twitter and other social media outlets weren't as unreliable at spreading out news quickly.

ANN does report on incidents that might affect attendees of conventions due to proximity and the likelihood they might be affected:

I'm worried that simply reporting criminal activity as a news item on ANN could give the impression attendees of the convention or anime fans were somehow already involved in a crime (not necessarily as perpetrators though).

I literally had to inform all my staff not to go eat in the area for fear for their safety. You all are being wildly insensitive about how common it is for con-goers to hit up Little Tokyo for meals and related events during this weekend.

It's also doubly important to have a news site like ANN report on anything that might be a safety issue for con goers now that Twitter is a complete mess which is where people used to get local news report from.

Agreed that the comments here are not only insensitive, but also ignorant.

When this incident happened, people were running for their lives and hiding in the backs of stores calling loved ones because they thought there was an active mass shooter…something that is sadly not uncommon in America these days. Thank God this incident was all it was and not something potentially far worse.

So yeah…this wasn’t exactly your usual everyday crime occurrence that affected AX and congoers, so ANN was in the right to report on this and it would have been journalistic negligence if they didn’t.

This happened when I was in the middle of the Love Live panel, and a bunch of my friends and Discord peeps posted about it when they got the notifications on their phones. We were planning on grabbing dinner after the panel, but our party was too large for the Yard House across the street from the con, so we wound up splitting up.

I suggested Little Tokyo, but was warned about this incident. Decided to try it anyway, since it was 2 hours since it had happened. Took the shuttle bus over with a group of about 10 of us, and by the time we got there, the crowds had recovered and the only real indication that anything had happened was camera crews shooting B-roll packing up. Ate dinner there with no incident.

I guess I’m just jaded.
