I have a feeling that Sumi Shimamoto will have a role in this movie.

Ballsy move... though I expect Miyazaki's name to be enough to generate hype for the movie.

Definitely even more curious about this movie than I was before. Looking forward to seeing it in theaters!

Who would have thought this movie would have something in common with the Knights of the Zodiac live action.

Looking forward to watching How Do You Live?. Hopefully it'll get a theatrical release outside Japan in July too, most likely in select theaters only though.
Even though this might be Hayao Miyazaki's last film before he actually retires due to his age and the time/years it takes to finish a film now compared to when he was younger, I kind of hope he can still get around to making some kind of Porco Rosso sequel, even if it's a short film. I think he was interested in working on more from that story back when Porco Rosso was newer. Could be wrong though.

At this point Mizayaki name alone tied to a movie should get people to watch it, at least at the start.
Also i kind of find it intriguing with no trailer, so many trailers these days practically spoil the whole movie without even tryin to hide the plot anymore. Miyazaki does not really spoil so much but we have seen quite a few of his movies that audiences can get a general idea where the plot will go.
So having no trailer just peaks my curouisty even more and less of a risk of being spoiled. Hope it will turns out to be good, but knowing Mizayaki, You know it will be

I appreciate a move like this so much. I personally don't like trailers and love going into a movie very blindly with no expectations.

When you're trading solely on Miyazaki's name and this no-marketing marketing gimmick, it really lowers my expectations and interest. Of course I'll watch it if I'm still around when it comes to streaming somewhere, but I won't be champing at the bit - especially since by then I'll know the plot and what people thought of it.
I guess it strikes me as blatant egoism (people will watch anything I make, regardless!), even if it's justified. I don't have a problem with them saving money on marketing and no trailers (though if your reason is spoilers, then just don't make your own trailers spoilery), but not even synopsis, cast or genre info? Is this an animated grindhouse film he's afraid people won't accept if they think he's stepping outside his genre? Could be! A romcom? A war story? Hentai?? We don't know!
Imagine doing this for say, a James Cameron film, with audiences expecting some big action movie and getting "My Dinner with Andre." There'd be riots in the theaters.

As someone that studied quite a bit of marketing, this is pretty annoying, and not for the "tired of marketing" thing, but for the huge misunderstanding they are causing. Marketing is not a trailer, it's not a campaign, and it's definitely not door to door sales.
Marketing is, simply put, comunication, in an effective, concise, and efficient way. They are doing marketing for this movie, it's just not resulting in trailers. Were they not to do any marketing, this article wouldn't even exist. They are applying marketing, this is a campaign, it's just not the usual one, but in doing so they are making people believe marketing is the "evil" that tires them out. I'm all for Miyazaki's movies, but this is not the way.

What are they communicating besides, "Miyazaki made another movie"? You can argue that they're communicating other things with their actions, like "we hold our audience in contempt for being sheep who'll watch this knowing nothing about it," or "to learn more, buy a ticket, haha!" None of what they're communicating makes me interested in seeing it.

That's what you'd call "bad marketing" but it's still marketing.
Personally, i can't watch a movie in theaters if i don't even know what it's about. A premise is not the same thing as a spoiler.

This kind of stunt might work in Japan but even with Miyazaki's legacy, I worry this might effect it's release internationally. Like Miyazaki is a huge name in the US even among casual animation fans, but how many casual animation fans even know that there's a new Miyazaki movie coming out in a few weeks? I hope they'll allow GKids to create their own trailer and do things like dub cast announcements which is important to boosting voice actors' profiles. Miyazaki might not need the marketing boost but it would be helpful for other people involved with the film. And even if you argue Miyazaki is a big enough name to not need a trailer, not releasing a cast list rubs me the wrong way.

I love Miyazaki's movies and I'll definitely catch this but put me in the category of people whose teeth are set on edge with this approach. Yes, Miyazaki, you're a living legend, so amazing... gosh, it must be such a massive ego boost to be able to take this approach with one of your peerless films, right? Goody for you. *golf clap*

Count me down as one of those people that doesn’t really like trailers, considering most of the trailers giveaway most of the important parts of the movie. Just the prestige of the films themselves is enough to sell it for me. Not that I’ve liked every one of his films. But just getting the chance to see one of his films as it’s mostly hot off the press is too hard to pass up for me
