HMMM....that is really bad right? Since I am pretty sure Dragon Ball Evolution, another horribly-received live action adaptation got higher box office than this, not to mention inflation.
Who greenlit this project? Does the producers really believe such half-assed effort can make Saint Seiya a main stream hit in the west? (To be fair, Saint seiya franchise is huge in the Latin region so cultural barrier is no excuse) Or is the whole thing a money-laundering scheme? People claim the latest Fast and Furious would be THE flop of the year, but I do believe this one takes the cake.

It is bad, but when you look at all of the factors working against it (only in 600 theaters compared to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 4,450 theaters, Mother’s Day was yesterday, low marketing, etc.), it’s no wonder it was bad. Personally, I find SS: The Lost Canvas to be the best of the franchise, but I’m looking forward to checking this movie out once it’s available on streaming.

Ooof. For a film that supposedly wasn't even that bad, (not great, but not the Dragonball Evolution) it's turning into the 2020s equivalent of John Carter. But with zero advertising and following a Guardians of the Galaxy 3 with very good word of mouth, it seemed almost inevitable.
This probably will scare Toei away from doing more Hollywood films for a good while. That and I can only presume Sony will try to dump this on Netflix before July.

Somebody set up us the bomb. What a legendary failure this one is. History books material in the making!
Saint Seiya is a very crusty IP and can never work again as is. I could see a very different take on it making money. The source manga is very violent for example so a grim & gritty Snyder/Nolan approach isn´t that bad an idea BUT the original fans have to die out for that to be allowed to happen as they will gatekeep the IP if it takes even one chance until it is dead.

Decent considering the wide scale cancelling of tickets and screens over the past week.
Forever bitter it was basically cancelled in my region.
Curious if they will stick to 6 movies...

The last big live-action adaptation mega bomb with franchise aspirations should be JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I from 2017. Even live-action AoT saw success with the dreadful first film before reality had to be faced and Death Note by Netflix was widely seen and only reactions killed the sequels. It might be the "only" Death Note in the lives of casual foreign audiences. Haha. A watchable 90s horror throwback if you ask me but the lack of a sequel rips it apart in the end. US GitS is unwatchable but it tells a complete story. One of its few good points.

The movie has released in the Netherlands as well now and... there is literally zero advertising for it. Nobody here, except for weebs like me who follow the news and/or are Saint Seiya fans, has even heard a whisper about it.
I haven't seen the movie yet so I won't judge on its quality, but it's still a shame. I've noticed a trend where companies try to really push Saint Seiya but the end result is still a flop. The 80's anime was on netflix for, what, a little under 2 years? They dubbed 114 episodes but sure gave up on that quick. I believe Discotek also said that, specifically for the US, it simply does not sell in particular regions.

A rumor I heard somewhere (so take it with a massive grain of salt) is that a Toei bigwig got his start on Seiya and credits it for his career, so he keeps pushing the IP despite all the pushback. Which is somewhat understandable, but when James Cameron pushes his pet project, he made billions. Hell, even Alita became enough of a cult classic 20th Century has begun opening discussions about a sequel. But Seiya missed its window, which was ironically, the same window that turned Dragonball into a property so huge it shrugged off DB Evolution, regularly makes huge hauls with its animated films, and had a fighting game so hyped up it got the Green Bay Packers and WWE’s New Day to help promote it. When your property has a Thanksgiving Day parade balloon, you’ve made it. Seiya missed that window, and while the logical route would be to pivot to something else, they keep trying with it. Eventually you need to just cut your losses and move on to another franchise.

Reboot with Dragon Quest 2020 treatment is what this franchise really needs at this point.
Include Asgard arc as well somehow.

The more I hear about this film and the circumstances surrounding it the more it just sounds like a massive tax write off that was never meant to be successful.

That would be Kozo Morishita, who was director of the first half of Saint Seiya (eps 1-73, i.e. the entire Sanctuary Chapter) & is now one of the leading producers over at Toei. To be fair, though, Morishita's love for the franchise would only be part of why Seiya keeps getting pushed by Toei. Simply put, it remains a popular & beloved anime in various regions of the world, just not "North of Mexico", and Bandai always love selling new Myth Cloth figures whenever it can, hence why it keeps getting pushed.
It's just that, after finishing the Hades OVAs in 2008, TMS surprised everyone by making the Lost Canvas OVAs (which included teaming with Bandai for some LC Myth Cloth figures), which likely spooked the hell out of Toei/Morishita, as it was another studio making money from "their" property. At least, that's the only way one can explain the continual run of Seiya productions from 2012 to 2015 (Omega, Legend of Sanctuary, Soul of Gold), followed by publicly announcing another three productions in late 2016 (the Saintia Sho anime, the CG reboot, & the Hollywood movie), even though none of them would be ready to see release for literally years (two for Saintia Sho, three for the reboot, & seven the for the movie). It was pretty much Toei trying to scare anyone off from trying to do anything else with Seiya and/or another Kurumada manga, in my opinion, and it seemingly worked.

As LordGeo said, it's Kozo Morishita who was the company's Chairman at the time of these recent adaptations. He has been with the company since the 70s and still is there despite stepping down to just a consultant now since 2020.
Little known fact, He broke budget on those Seiya episodes he directed citing that he had finished working on the Transformers movie at the time which had no budget.

Man, I haven't seen a movie grossing so little money in quite a while. Not that the movie is doing great in other regions, despite Saint Seiya being popular in Latin America the movie couldn't compete against Mario and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even when Sony tried the best they could like bringing back Saori and Ikki's original dub voice actors to reprise their roles and Seiya being voiced by his current voice actor in the dub as well. And the fan reception in Latin America was pretty negative, only a few liked it, though honestly this movie seem more like a direct-to-Netflix. Don't think the movie is going to do better in other countries where Saint Seiya is popular like France, Italy and Spain. Perhaps it could make some decent money in China, where Seiya is popular and where the movie's main producers are from but someone told me that there's no release date for the movie in China yet.
Honestly, it seems like Toei has mismanaged the Saint Seiya brand for over 30 years at this point, like those American adaptations that were never made (Guardians of the Cosmos and StarStorm), how long they took to adapt the Hades Saga, the failure of the Tenkai Hen: Overture and other things like Saint Seiya Omega, Legend of Sanctuary, the CGI show, etc. At least it seems the brand is still popular enough for Bandai, but it's nowhere near to Dragon Ball levels

This is what it sounded like to me. Some have been looking at the low number and assuming that it was just terrible, when really not many theaters showed it, and there was next to no marketing budget for it. It would be MORE surprising if it actually did well, considering everything it had against it (especially in the NA market).
