The fact it happened on the day of Universal Pictures' 111th is even better.

We are definitely getting more Nintendo films. I'm presuming Zelda is next.

Now that I think about it, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the frist movie based on a Japanese IP that managed to gross over U$S 1 billion. That's a huge achievement on itself. And no, Transformers doesn't count as a Japanese IP, perhaps the original toyline was composed of repurposed toys from separate Japanese toylines but all of the series' mythology and future toy designs were created in the U.S.

It's amazing to think that Mario is now among Universal's most successful movies like Jaws, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, the Back to the Future trilogy, the Jurassic Park series, the Fast & Furious series, etc.

It's a shame the Saint Seiya movie went the other way and bombed.

More like depressing - Jaws, E.T., the Back to the Future trilogy and the first Jurassic Park are all classics, whereas all those other films you mention are...not

You know that even with such a great list you will be face palming for not putting “Donkey Kong” up there!
With Mario really buddying up with DK like that, and having a major centerpiece featuring the Kong’s world (not to mention the next addition to Nintendo’s own theme park), makes that one to likely be their next film.
TLoZ will likely require a budget larger than a DK film as well, so best to build up to it properly.
See you at the movies!

Right now, Disney must be wondering how could they surrender their crown as the king of family-friendly entertaiment to Universal in such a dramatic fashion.

When all your stuff ends up on Disney+ for no extra cost within 2-3 months of the cinema release (or you send Pixar films straight to Disney+), don't be surprised when families decide to wait to watch your films at home instead. Disney were short-sighted and sacrificed box office to drive up subscriber numbers.

I wouldn't count out Little Mermaid just yet though, it looks like lazy garbage but 80s/90s nostalgia is a hell of a drug

Yeah, but Flounder looks like it will gives kids nightmares for weeks. No thanks.

Mario is definitely going to be the first step. Zelda seems like the logical second, and then…another Hollywood Chris as Kirby?
