Thanks for reviewing this Rebecca! I agree that Kabaton has been the one weakness. I love the time we spend with our core group, then get disappointed when he shows up for his obligatory battle. Excited for the next cours!

I've found Kabaton to be pretty entertaining though not too endearing; his schemes have at least been more creative than the usual villain fare. I'm a little curious to see if he sticks around and if so in what capacity, prior Precure seasons have had some good examples of early defeated villains who ended up with interesting long-term arcs (Bunbee and Close especially come to mind).

I've been really enjoying this season! The plot is a bit more engaging and the fights are much more interesting then Delicious Party so far, and the Precure's designs are MUCH stronger imo
I also just think the core team of characters is more engaging this seasons! I didn't dislike any of the Delicious Party team (besides Yui, who was pretty bland) but the dynamics between Soaring Sky's are just more interesting in every way. I don't know if it's because of the fun monkey wrench of Sora and Tsubasa being from another world or if the writing is just stronger overall; it might just be that a lot of DP's team was pretty archetypal (Yui's the cheerful one, Kokone is the shy rich girl, Ran is the energetic one etc). I think it might just be that the character conflicts in DP felt very separate from the actual saving the world they were doing, but Soaring Sky always has the characters remember that they're fighting as a team to protect someone.

Been really entertained by this season. Of all the recent Precure series, this is definitely top tier. Kabaton isn't threatening, but he has that Team Rocket type appeal to me. Mashiro and Sora may be labeled as friends, but DAMN do they feel a few steps away from being a proper couple. Tsubasa and Ageha are great, and this series has just been pretty great. Has had some good fights too NGL

Agreed! I do feel little bad about dunking on Delicious Party Precure, but it does feel that those aspects you mentioned are ones I felt were lacking last season. Even the baby feels like an endearing character which stills shocks me.

It's unusual for a Precure series to take it so slow to introduce the main cast but it's really paying off. It also helps of course that the characters and their interactions are a lot of fun (including Kabaton and, surprisingly, Elle. Coolest and funniest baby).
They even got the time and gall to make jabs at the corporate-made structures and decisions of the franchise that often get in the way of writing engaging episodes.

At this rate, this may be the first Precure in about half a decade to actually have a mid-season climax that changes up the status quo.

Man, 13 episodes in, and Hirogaru Sky is already proving to be a lot better than Delicious Party by a mile. Yeah, DeliPre wasn't all that good in the end, and seriously, would it kill the characters to talk about something that ISN'T food for more than five seconds? I already find myself caring more about the HiroSky girls than I ever did the characters in DeliPre. I also love that they actually keep Ageha in the loop about what's going on with the Cures, and even allow her to help out even though she doesn't have any powers. Also, Tsubasa is a pwecious baby boy. I want a plushie of his bird form!

And that was already toned down compared to what they did in Kirakira!
I found myself enjoying Delipa, but in retrospect that was mostly because of the spice added by the boys and the food theme just not being as permeating and tiresome as I expected.

Yeah for sure! I was kind of dreading Ellee because I have a very low tolerance level for cutesy baby mascots that the main characters have to take care of, but they handle her really well. I like how her development just as a growing child often mirrors the main characters chasing after their own dreams and growing emotionally. It's nice!
And I know, I feel kinda bad poking at Delicious Party too lol. There were certainly aspects of it that I enjoyed a lot! Rosemary was a constant delight and while Kokone and Ran's arcs often felt really divorced from their Precure activities, I still really enjoyed them as characters all the same.

This is certainly my favorite season in a good while, love all the characters and their interactions.
I like Kabaton, I think the problem isn't him but how up to EP13 the Underg Empire is still very mysterious, which I think beat KiraKira's record of not showing the villain's HQ (it was 11 or 12 episodes there), unlike KiraKira I do think Kabaton did a good job at carrying the early stage though, it just would be nice to see him interacting with other generals, but still he had some fun interactions with the Cures themselves.
