I will never understand how this got funded as the film will never make a profit due to how limited its availability is. I trust the film´s middling reputation and it also had a negative effect on the manga.
It went through design shifts and retcons to line it up with a film most readers will never see. Especially after its initial release a decade ago. Can´t say that this reader was happy to be put on a near-decade hiatus to only get a worse manga when it returned due to this very film. The film only screens in 4K. Both streaming and Ultra HD can do just that. Dito for the film´s audio mix. To say that it can´t be experienced outside of rare screenings in Japanese theaters is total wank. How to prevent piracy:
1. Take down piracy sites 2. Provide better service than the piracy sites 3. |

it's just a marketing scheme to attract idiots. it's pretty much a cashgrab scheme so they can attract moviegoers to the film's screenings. only downside of it is this scheme is the most braindead film scheme i've ever sceen
you can never take down piracy sites, it's like a hydra. if you cut one head, two spawns. the only way is to make your service so good to the point that turning to piracy ones would be inconvenient and good luck with that when most avid pirated anime watchers are from the third world, the most thing that make a ceo go batshit insane is the concept of ''regional pricing'' |

He needs to release this, before it becomes lost media; modern PCs & mobile devices running video at 4K/24-30 are common now.

I’ve accepted Nagano is one of those turbo auteur types who will never let his work be animated in any conventional fashion, even if Netflix threw all the money at him for a 1:1 Five Star Stories, the same way I’ve accepted as long as Masaki Kajishima controls it, we’ll never get a proper Tenchi Muyo reboot that tries to make the story coherent. But that doesn’t make this any less annoying.

And that without going, from what we can see in the trailers, the films doesn't look much better than an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" episode. |

For the record. The 1989 The Five Star Stories movie that is only 4 minutes shorter is "good" and a totally workable adaptation of the first arc. The animation is also on point despite Nagano not being involved in any way. Best of all, the film never harmed its source material, unlike Gothicmade. Why are people still complaining about it?
His 2nd best know work Heavy Metal L-Gaim sucks btw and shows what happens when he and Tomino don´t work to their strengths and instead go to war with each other. FSS is a partial "remake" of it. So Nagano was very special from the start. The L-Gaim OP is 10/10 though. Edit: The 1989 film adapts the first 3 chapters almost shot for shot and looks better than most 80s films/OVAs. No one can tell me that Sunrise in its prime phoned it in. |

Given that not even cam-rips of this movie seem to be circulating out there, 3. would appear to be "Release only in theaters." And since the criterion of "good service" is "what gives me the most anime for the cheapest price?" there's no real way for legal sites to come out ahead, since illegal sites will always have a better selection, and legal sites can't pay people to watch.
Modern-day anime bootleg streaming sites are more like a house of cards, where a handful of sites host or set up their own streams (by creating lower-quality hardsubbed re-encodes of videos ripped from legal streaming sites), and a bunch of others just scrape or re-stream from those sites. Taking down a few of the independent sites would throw dozens of others into chaos. There's also the option of going after pirate sites' advertising/donation funding, which forces them to turn to shadier ad networks, thus making piracy more risky for viewers and making legal sites a more attractive option. If the most avid anime pirates are from the 3rd world, wouldn't that mean that anime piracy (when not about regional unavailability) is a pricing problem? CR and others have experimented with regional pricing, I believe. However, the problem comes when residents of wealthier countries decide to spoof their location and game the system, as we saw with Steam in places like Russia and Argentina. |

I agree with you! Very strange that it has no DVD and Blu-ray releases as of now. |

FSS has always made me feel weird. It's fascinating, but at the same time, pretty hard to get into. Then Gothicmade comes out and even a decade later I'm still having difficulty understanding WTH is it.
Dunno why no else has pointed this, but the mechs in FSS are Mortar Headds (MH), not Motor Heads. (Yeah, with double 'd'.) Also, I actually liked L-Gaim. |

The Gothicmade situation has always just felt really like gatekeeping for the sake of gatekeeping, but at the same time I can't say that I would have even known that the movie existed had it not been for it's unavailability.
My interest is piqued on the original FSS though, I'll probably watch that movie at some point |

I'm sorry, and I know this isn't nice, but F this guy. He sounds incredibly pretentious. "Oh, I made this incredible thing, but only certain people are going to be able to see it". I'm going to go out of a limb and suggest that this movie probably isn't even that good. No, this is not me eating sour grapes, it's just that it seems like a high-medium film that would have been forgotten 9 years ago if is was released normally.
