Considering the losing value of the yen to USD because of the current economical crisis, it may be not as impressive as it sounds - but yeah, it's BIG numbers even for a Shinkai movie, and they do really well in general in past years in the domestic market.

I was talking about the movie itself.

Yes, it's very good - much better than Weathering with You, imo.

Good to hear. Considering people are writing things like "Makoto Shinkai Is Really Going To Make The Same Film Three Times In A Row" because of the star-struck couple and mystical doors/gateways I'm glad that someone who's seen it can confirm that it's got a unique vision and identity (which I never doubted). I definitely preferred your name to Weathering with You but I feel like this one might be combining the best of both.
I mean, it isn't exactly surprising to find common themes and tropes in a creator's films. That's basically an artist's signature or fingerprint. I'm reminded of that time Yoshiyuki Tomino described all of Shinkai's works as "stories about a boy and a girl who are always stretching out their hands towards each other" where "the boy's hand never reaches the girl's crotch."
I'm guessing we're going to be hearing more of this sort of trolling in the near future given these box office numbers.

I love your name. so much, but for some reason Weathering With You never seemed appealing enough for me to actually sit down and watch it. I need to try it sooner or later, because I am definitely going to watch Suzume.

I know those must be forced clickbaity articles, but that still seems like such a stretch. "Boy and girl try to get together despite ridiculously difficult circumstances" is a major element of like 90% of all stories, and Your Name and Weathering only sort of technically have mystical gateways (I guess they meant the spooky time-warping twilight-zone area, and the shrine gate... neither of which is central to the plot, unlike in Suzume). The biggest similarity is probably the looming cosmic catastrophe, though the end results are very different.
If anything, from the trailers, this one reminds me more of Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Not entirely clear there's even romance in it, though people are bound to assume so.

I completely agree with everything you're saying (including the Children vibes), but there are nonetheless lots of people (including on this site) who feel like Shinkai's films are becoming repetetive and self-referential (see the first post in the Suzume review thread, which basically calls it your name. 3, as well as some of the points made in the review itself, which I enjoyed). The "mystical gateway"/apocalyptic catastrophe thing is just one example of that.
