Still not looking forward to this, but Estrada is an interesting pick. He previously handled Asian rep well in Raya and the Last Dragon, and in live-action Blindspotting was a huge critical hit. Creatives obviously don't make a movie though, so I'm not holding my breath.

I thought this would have been quietly cancelled like all the other random live actions that keep getting announced.

I wonder if they'll go the Departed/Infernal Affairs route and use the story points and apply it to an American or Western setting. I would imagine it's the only viable way to get this done.

No sure if this is still the direction they're going, but I heard that they'd be replacing the use of Japanese culture... with Native American culture. Make of that what you will. |

Given how many directors Robotech and other anime IP optioned for films have gone through without a single set being made, there’s still plenty of time for this to be canceled. A director being put on retainer is essentially filing an intent to film, not a guarantee it will be. Heck, Naruto has had a director since 2016 and there is no hint of production beginning (apparently the director refuses to begin production unless Kishimoto approves the script). So just because a director is hired doesn’t mean it will get made. Best case scenario has this years away. |

It's like these idiots at Hollywood will never learn the lesson.

I've seen some pretty heavy criticism on how Raya portrayed Southeast Asian cultures from Southeast Asians, so I don't have a lot of faith in this portraying Japanese culture well. Not like I had my hopes up high to begin with, though.

You're being very optimistic if you think they're keeping the Japanese setting and characters. |

I'm not sure why they don't just adapt it as a live action Japanese film. It's not like it's the kind of movie that needs a high budget for live action as it all takes place in real world settings.

Hollywood is constantly emphasizing representation, so why not have Japanese actors/actresses in this pending-live-action film. They could have kept the story in the part of Japan that the anime is set in. Big Hollywood studios have the pockets to do international co-productions. |

I could be completely misremembering but I'm fairly sure that the request to Americanize the story actually came from whatever Japanese companies were involved, weirdly enough, since the best way to do a Japanese setting could be to let a Japanese studio handle it.

I feel like that's actually a fairly decent idea. Adaptations aren't strict copies of something, and with translating stories to a different culture, you should take advantage of that. Having the girl's family be Native American is like a western equivalent of what her family is. And it makes sense. I wasn't crazy about Your Name, I only thought it was ok, but I'd check out a new take that utilizes new, interesting aspects of the story. Native culture is also hella under represented in media. As a Native American, I think that's cool to have more representation. |

Best of luck to them, but without Shinkai's visuals and storytelling flair I'm just not sure there's a point to this adaption.
