Gyaru romcoms are really in vogue now!
I just kind of wish it was a studio other than Engi.

Well, good for you, I guess. For me, gyarus are just a weird variant of the genki trope, a trope I'm not exactly a fan of, so uh.. yeah. It is what it is, I guess.

They've been a thing for a while now. My First Girlfriend is a Gal aired five years ago.
In fact, I think the trend might've peaked by now? I looked on Baka-Updates Manga to see how many manga were listed with the Gyaru tag per year over the past decade. Here's what I found:
Code: | 2021 19
2020 57
2019 29
2018 30
2017 39
2016 41
2015 26
2014 24
2013 14
2012 6 |
And this year has only nine so far.

Would that be anime with Gyrau characters supporting or lead? Because I can't think of many this year that had one as the lead.

I'm curious. The gyaru reminds me of Marin Kitagawa.

He's talking about manga, not anime. And considering the number of new manga released yearly, those are very much believable numbers.

Yeah, I guess I should read the whole post I'd love to see more manga with Gyrau's like Gal Gohan, which I loved. Hakkaido Girls Are Super Adorable would be a great one to bring over.

We would need a third year to establish a consistent downward trend given the strongest year on record was 2020 and the second strongest was 2016 with quite a variable in between and 3 years prior. Its also possible that variability could come from changing levels of reporting. With more people tagging a show for gyaru from supporting characters some years and others not.
I suspect that as a sub genre it is not a strong enough type to hold a show just on that 1 aspect. That is its, most of the time, not the primary typing of a show, like isekai, science fiction or slice of life. For example probably the most well known gyaru right now is Marin-chan from my dress up darling, the question is do you count her typing being gyaru as the primary driving force for her cosplay (the main aspect of the show) or more just an expression of her character?

You mean as an anime? Because MangaPlus is already releasing it in English. Also on a note on that series, fans haven't exactly been too keen on the latest developments on the romcom front in that. Being up-to-date on it, I kind of understand why...
