The only competition next weekend is another Elba movie, this time, from the Mad Max guy. Feel sorry for Elba that his leading man roles were dumped in August, with no understanding of how big DB basically is, even after Broly.

Yes, it is tracking to do a little more than double what Broly did on opening weekend. There are a few factors to consider though. For one, anime movies have been grossing more year over year as anime/manga are becoming more mainstream. During the pandemic, Demon Slayer was a surprise hit since so many other films were delayed which gave more attention to anime movies potential at western box office as a whole. And lastly, probably the most important factor, Super Hero opened in more than 3000 theaters compared to Broly's 1200ish. |

Yes, but Super Hero also has a lot more screens than Broly. According to Box Office Mojo:

Should be noted, Broly opened on a Wednesday, not a Friday so it's a bit hard to compare. Though Super Hero's Thursday previews are counted for Friday. In box office discussions, you may sometimes see the term "True Friday" which is where they try to exclude previews from the Friday gross.
Also comparing Broly to Super Hero in Japan using US dollars is not a great comparison as the yen is considerably weaker right now than it was in 2019. $1=110 yen or so in 2019 when now it's $1=137 yen. Any comparisons about comparing the two's Japanese gross should be done in yen, not dollars. |

Beast did a little better, but Super's still the winner. *Cue Queen song*. No surprise, either, as DB is like Pokemon in '99. https://deadline.com/2022/08/box-office-dragon-ball-super-super-hero-beast-idris-elba-1235096162/ Beast was R-rated, and Elba hasn't had a hit which wasn't Sonic or Thor.

Interesting article, especially since they point out Super’s advertising was focus predominantly on social media at a far lower cost than Beast’s ad campaign. |

Considering that theatrical anime releases in the U.S. tend to be* limited releases, that much opening weekend is actually a great start box office wise.
*Wikipedia's page of "Limited theatrical release" defines it as "a film distribution strategy of releasing a new film in a few theaters across a country, typically art house theaters in major metropolitan markets. Since 1994, a limited theatrical release in the United States and Canada has been defined by Nielsen EDI as a film released in fewer than 600 theaters.[1][2] " |

I watched in the cinema this weekend and i truly enjoyed it. It was my only 2nd every film i ever had chance to see it on the big screen. (Anime movies are extremely rare here to get a cinema screen.)
I recommend it, it was a fun experience. |

can you imagine the box office take if Demon Slayer takes the Mugen Train route and turns it's final arc, Infinity Castle, into a movie (or 2 part movie, maybe even 3) first. A lot of people would be able to retire early.
