Nice to wake up to a Darkstalkers retrospective, but in light of how comprehensive this article is there are a couple of surprising, glaring omissions:

1. There is mention of Yoshinori Ono's infamous proclamation that "Darkstalkers are not dead," but no follow-up on the failure that was Darkstalkers: Resurrection, why it failed to sell, and how it was a part of the now known & heavily flawed "Capcom Test" which is why the statement from Shuhei Matsumoto about the CAPCOM Fighting Collection was made in the first place.

2. This article also fails to mention the simple bottom line: Darkstalkers games never sold in any significant capacity. Even its arcade popularity was brief because of the game's difficulty. So while Darkstalkers characters are popular, the games themselves are not.

Really enjoyed reading through this, thanks! I think the future of Fighting Games in Capcom is looking bright again, and I hope that this might lead to expanding more and giving some titles another chance.

It sold far more than people seem to think. The first installment alone sold 40,000 arcade boards, which is more than games like Final Fight or the first two Mortal Kombat games. All three of the games' series also were in the top 5 of their respective years' arcade income charts in Japan, with Vampire Hunter making it as high as #3.
