When I first saw "Bambi Meets Godzilla" I laughed for about a week.
Excellent look at the history of an important cross-cultural touchstone. I can't remember, did King Gojulas ever show up in any of the Zoids anime? |

Great article!
Luna Varga is one of my VHS treasures. It is a great show. The immortal Banjou Ginga was freaking awesome in it! King Kong Escapes is a guilty pleasure of mine and I will defend it to the end. Mechanikong punching King Kong in the neck during a fight while climbing up Tokyo Tower is a sight to behold. Scrappy Doo was a little bastard, but I still liked him. AC |

I also remember seeing a stop-motion version of "Bambi Meets Godzilla" where Godzilla is actually played by the Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

If you want to see Godzilla in another piece of old animation, he makes a very brief cameo in “Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown.”

The image of Jet Jaguar with the subtitles about insecurity is taken from the MST3K episode, isn't it?

I remember religiously watching the HB Godzilla cartoon on Saturday mornings as a kid. Looking back on it, it was quite formulaic; the kids were on some kind of research boat with roughly human-sized Godzooky, they'd goof around, get into some crisis, and then Godzooky would cry out to summon Godzilla to deal with the problem. But it was damn cool from a little kid's perspective. (Coincidentally, I brought this up when talking about the recent Godzilla vs. Kong movie just a few days ago.)
That was my introduction to Godzilla, and I don't think I knew that he wasn't a cartoon-original character until years later. |

Heck, Rankin/Bass' old King Kong series was part of my own childhood (along side Astroboy, Prince Planet, Speed Racer, Marine Boy and Ultraman).

Yay, another piece from Mike! Always a joy to see your articles.
I remember years ago being so surprised to learn how few Japanese produced animated Godzilla works there are. I think I looked into it when that '90s Godzilla cartoon was discovered by my nephew for free On Demand from Comcast (he watched it religiously in the early 2000s). I always assumed there was some kind of show that just never got brought over, but there just wasn't anything officially made for decades. It seems such a strange decision, but I guess they just focused on making the live action movies and didn't care to expand into other markets. Thanks for explaining that Sesame Street style anime! I remember coming across it then, and there was no English information available at the time that I could find. Just one puzzling promo image. You've solved a mystery that I completely forgot about from almost 20 years ago. |

That it is. I don't think it's a controversial position to say that Godzilla The Series is the best of the lot. I mean, it managed to make the movie Godzilla cool...by making him a cyborg version of Mechagodzilla and inadvertently drawing comparisons to Kiryu Mechagodzilla all those years later. Not like it had a lot of competition, but the series worked pretty well. |

Anyone who didn't immediately sing "...and Godzooooookyyyyyy!" upon seeing this headline is a liar.

I really appreciate the return of Mike with a very interesting article, as always! Hopefully it won't be long before he comes back with another topic.

Yes, and it may sound funny, but in reality, it's just insulting to the character. Here are the actual lyrics: A shining sky; a deep red sun Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar! Our Jaguar! When the earth is in danger, and the bad guys come-Let's punch! Godzilla and Jaguar, they punch, punch, punch! They are the friends of justice! Whenever something happens, hit it straight on- Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar! That's Jaguar! No fear of space monsters- Sea monsters get thrashed! Godzilla and Jaguar, they punch, punch, punch! Everything falls to the wayside of these two Though only a robot built by man Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar! He's the coolest, Jaguar! There he goes to protect the peace- Everyone's amazed by the courage he displays! Godzilla and Jaguar, they punch, punch, punch! Don't cry, for neither will we! Keep standing tall! Jet Jaguar theme |

"Godzilaaaaaa...ahhhhhhh!" It hurts a little that I can remember that song so well all these years later. It wasn't my first entry into the Godzilla franchise, but it was how I first learned about "little G". Oddly enough, my personal gripes w/ the Godzilla v Kong movie stems from the H-B cartoon, in a sort of backwards sort of way. |

That little jingle doesn't go away, along with "GODZILLA" with the flaming background. I also remember watching the old black and white Superman cartoons, and in one episode Superman is fighting a giant dinosaur thing that was unfrozen from ice. It always reminded me of Godzilla and that might've been what they were going for. I guess that's as close as we'll ever get to Superman vs Godzilla. And as probably the only Godzilla fan on the planet who considers the 1998 'Zilla movie as one of his favorite movies, I naturally liked the animated series which follows Zilla Jr (who now has atomic breath unlike his parent). I remember trying to catch every episode on Fox (which treated the show terribly often replacing its airtime with some sports broadcast or something) right after another animated favorite of mine, "Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot". |
