I really want to know more about Mito and what purpose she serves in the story because being Asuna's previously unseen best friend who got her into SAO and was with her from the start feels like too much of a departure from Asuna's story in the novel in my opinion.
I am happy that the adaption is focusing so much on Asuna's story though.

Yep, more Asuna is never a bad thing.

I feel like Kirito is literally the least interesting character in SAO so I'm actually really excited to see this.

No mention was made about the actual animation.
So, is the movie better animated than the TV series?
It is a movie after all.....

So was Argo in the movie at all? Because she is a major part of the real 'Aria of a Starless Night' story, and hasn't shown in any of the promotional images.

Yes, briefly. She's shown spying on Kirito in the final scene of the film.

It's a very good movie; a must-see for Asuna fans. Her character development is something else.

He's my favorite...so I don't agree....however this film shows his extremely awkward sides which makes him even more lovable lol. When they first meet, he can't even look her in the eye...and he's so nervous around her that he keeps missing the sheath when he tries to put his sword back. It's seriously adorable. Their chemistry is so great. They talk about all kinds of things, important things and little things...like real people. Their relationship steadily builds up like it should....and if all the future movies have this good a pacing, it's going to be REALLY a rewarding experience to see them finally confess to each other....again. You'll be saying "Wow, damn, no wonder she fell so hard for him!" even by the end of this first movie.
So um....yeah. I love the way this was all directed. I think this is probably the best way to introduce an anime fan to the series. The battles and music were also top-notch. See it in IMAX if you can.
Can we also talk about how CLEAN it was!? There is absolutely nothing that would make any viewer feel 'awkward' about watching it. There is NO fanservice or pervy moments at all. It's a little surprising, given that it's SAO and all...but yeah seriously! It's squeaky-clean. Even though Asuna takes a bath; all you see is her collar bones, her legs, and feet. Lol

I saw it at the cinema tonight and although it was nice to see a new relationship between Misumi and Asuna (and why the former was pretty capable inside SAO given her aptitude for games) I feel it lulled a little in the middle. It definitely picked up again in the final act and the animation during the action scenes was really solid.
I can't say at this time whether I'll see the next one in the cinema but I'm curious as I'm hoping it continues to cover new material rather than be a retread of the first series from a different POV.

No need to worry about that. In the original series, a big time jump happens when Kirito goes up to the second floor, and all of the Progressive content which has been released in novels so far is filling in that time skip. So even though we know where the story will ultimately end up, everything past the point where the movie ends is entirely new content.
