The saddest thing is that I'm sure a lot more of this kind of crap goes down than we are privy to. This is just one sad, egregious drop in the bucket for an industry that routinely takes advantage of animators.
My assumption is that its a finished work since it seems more likely a freelancer would talk about a project that's already out (and yeah given that Kakegurui, Dorohedoro, and Yasuke are the only MAPPA anime even lon Netflix... it doesn't leave a lot of doubt as to which one is being referred to). |

Remember that Netflix, Crunchyroll and Sony/Funimation are just as equally unethical when it comes to over-production. Remember that NO ONE among them are doing anything to alleviate this problem.
P.S.: This is not to say that people should start pirating anime. After all, consumers can't really do anything about this. |

Well I guess you make the same leap that ANN did by posting a Yasuke poster with this article. Even though Ippei did not mention what project it was. And in fact he clarified by saying "To avoid misunderstanding, I have to say that my issue is with Netflix."
Seems like someone at ANN threw Yasuke under the bus for some reason on this one. I'd like to know why so many posting on this site hate on that series in particular? Though I'm sure it's just the American way. |

No one here (as well as the thread in r/anime) is talking about Yasuke. Not sure where you pick up that people are blaming Yasuke on this. |

Well I suppose it may have been posted for the sake of having an image. Yasuke is MAPPA series made for Netflix so it seems like the most appropriate one. |

Seconding this. I don't like it when anime fans use stories like these (low translator wages, poor treatment of animators, streaming corporations being streaming corporations, etc.) to promote piracy. It's not going to help anyone in the long run. I have a feeling stories like these will become more commonplace as demand for new anime grows. When are we going to get to a point where animators die during the making of these (if it hasn't happened already)? |

I mean, it's no secret that Netflix loves to produce content on the cheap whether it it be anime or live-action and screw over its creators in the process with holding rights over the products they make. That's why is so shocking when, amongst the bunch of trash a year they produce, they still manage to come out with one or two good shows that don't look produced by them.
I'm not surprised one bit by this. Yasuke was not a good show, Record of Ragnarok looked dreadful with its stifled animation, and The Way Of The Househusband was an abomination, so I'm not optimistic about this Netflix deal to produce anime for their platform. I already hate Netflix for what it does with its "Netflix Jail" distribution system for other anime, but this type of pattern from NF is just horrendous and inexcusable in an industry that is already exploitative. |

It's not really surprising, people keep saying that Netflix is going to improve pay for animators, but why would they when the cheap costs benefit them.

Yasuke is the only MAPPA show funded by Netflix. The others have only been licensed by Netflix internationally. If Ippei is putting the blame on Netflix, then it would be because they are the production company behind it. |

People dying from overwork in Japan is depressingly nothing new, and the problem isn't exclusive to the anime industry. The other article that popped up recently about the problems in Spider anime mentioned people "literally killing themselves" to finish the project, although how literal that was is unknown. But to answer your question: yes, it has already happened. A particularly notorious case was Kazunori Mizuno's passing in 2017; he fell asleep on his desk at the studio and never woke up https://www.crunchyroll.com/es/anime-news/2017/04/06-1/naruto-and-bleach-animator-kazunori-mizuno-passes-away Mizuno made the news because he was a veteran with a long career in the industry, but i'm almost dreadfully certain that there are multiple other cases of lesser known and experienced animators that have lost their lives due to these disgusting business practices, and we just don't know of them because they died before they even had a chance to make a name for themselves |

We have heard about the bad condition of the animators several times in the past months. Please let's change this situation.
One of the main reasons why animators get paid so little is that anime studios focus only on the limited domestic market and therefore cannot earn enough money and do not know that anime is very popular outside of Japan. And people are already paying to watch anime, so streaming services like Netflix take advantage of this and pay a small fee for the right to play anime. Let's create a situation where instead of paying for streaming services to watch anime, we pay this directly to anime studios. We anime fans need to change this situation when the chainsaw man anime trailer aired and chainsaw man became a trend on Twitter Japanese studios were stunned. Japanese studios and animators should definitely realize that they have a lot of fans outside of Japan and in the world. Please let's trend the word "#Support Japanese Anime Animator" on Twitter to let Japanese anime studios know that anime is popular in the world and the status of animators is important to fans. This may be a small step, but rest assured it will change the situation in the future I ask everyone, especially those who have a YouTube channel or site or Twitter account, to share this message with others. The world of anime is a world we all love, so please let's protect anime and change the bad situation of the animators who make anime for our enjoyment. Actually, Netflix pays a massive amount for anime. It just goes to the production companies. In the case of MAPPA, they already have a load of money, but they're instead using it to create even more shows rather than invest in the welfare of the people that create their shows. |

This is in regards to production, not licensing. Netflix generally pays a lot when it comes to licensing other programming, but are far more risk-averse with their own produced shows like Eden and Yasuke. |
