Well, she's not the first female seiyuu to do a gravure shoot.

Nothing wrong with gravure shoots. What I meant is that people would see "Nezuko" and "Playboy" and jump to wild conclusions.

There's a lot of hysteria on western social media whenever people discover that Japan has no problem sexualizing minors. Presumably it's the newer and more casual fans who don't know any better, but it's extremely common to open up a Shonen magazine and find a gravure spread of both underage manga characters and underage gravure idols because that's what the target demographic for these series like. Obviously the idea of a children's series associating with this stuff in America would be unheard of, but this is as old as time in Japan.

I kind of feel weird with that wording, because it's not like child exploitation isn't a problem that Japan recognizes. They very well do -- around 2007/2008 they got criticized by the UN and Amazon JP removed a lot of underage gravure DVDs; a lot of distributors have also since shut down since possession of child porn was made illegal in 2014. Most gravure idols you see in magazines and selling merchandise are 18 and older now.

The UN complains about Japan almost every year but Japan never really complies to what they say. That industry is still very much active. It's one of the most common ways for actors and singers to get noticed and make their big break in the industry: join a group or agency early on and work their way up from there through their teenage years. Even general idol groups do swimsuit spreads and gravure shoots regardless of the age of their members. That stuff never went anywhere. Amazon is one company - based in the US no less. Their decision is not reflective of the hundreds of Japanese retailers that still carry this stuff, or the general attitude you can see about this stuff from major mainstream shows and TV personalities who acknowledge and take part in this industry.

Or, like this very thread, you really can’t find a way to not take any opportunity to soapbox about how Japan’s history of sexualizing minors is super cool and everyone there loves it (your ignorance on that topic is also off topic so we don’t need to go into that). Even when it has nothing to do with the topic. This isn’t a spread of Nezuko or an underage actress. People have the ability to read past a headline even if that’s all you want to react to. There’s been zero outrage in this thread other than people projecting it onto straw men in order to justify preemptive defensiveness of a thing that is not happening here.

[insert angry rant about how calling anime characters "minors" is stupid here] lol
Thankfully Twitter's been quiet about it. I'm...rather shocked. Please keep it that way.

Lol, Weekly Playboy is not the equivalent of Playboy in the US, but it's weird they named it that way

I wouldn't quite phrase it "Japan doesn't care." Not to say Rentwo is wrong, but the phrasing gives the impression that no one in Japan cares. There are quite a lot of people in Japan campaigning to get this industry cleaned up.
But there are also so many people who are completely apathetic to the issue. Sure, many of them will sneer at a middle-aged man "reading" a gravure magazine, but if you ask them what should be done about the issue, they'll just shrug and say "しょうがない" ("it can't be helped"). Add to that the fact that the Japanese government really doesn't like doing anything about... well, anything. So the result is that the industry is allowed to continue, and since it has it's fans, it does indeed continue mostly unabated.
The people campaigning for change may be slowly getting changes made, but the changes occur at a glacial pace.

If they want to campaign to protect REAL minors, that's fine and good and encouraged but they need to leave the drawings alone. They are not harming anyone.
