Honestly I think it's still quite enjoyable watching now with the last Evangelion Rebuild movie hitting Amazon Prime today and Getter Robo Arc airing on HiDive. Because there's huge parodies to both franchises within the series.

I watched it a couple of years ago on a friend's recommendation and I found it very good (Prince of Darkness aside). I also watched it in dub which has Akito played by Spike Spiegel which was some real whiplash right after having watched Evangelion lol.

Interestingly Concrete Revolutio has a similar take on fiction from the Showa era and war. Where the the main character is a child of the cold war, someone who wants to make sense of a world that seemingly wants to destroy itself and finds flawed answers in a fictionalised version of justice similar to the likes Gekiganger 3.
I still haven't watched prince of Darkness, despite owning it on Blu-Ray and having a print out explanation from someone this site about what happens in the Saturn game, as I hear too many bad things about it. The dubs interesting as it has a lot of early roles for actors who later became staples of ADV and later Sentai. For Monica Rial it was her first ever dub. |

My only comment is that the voice actress for Yurika choose a singsongy voice that I find incredibly annoying. Looking at behind the voice actors, she was only in 3 dubs.

This was one of the first shows I saw when I got into anime around 2003, and also one of the first where I'd read reviews and such. I'd heard it was a bit uneven going into it, and that the ending has a few problems, like it - minor spoiler[ - doesn't really have one, in some people's opinions.] So I expected comedy and not a great adventure/fighting story, and wasn't disappointed then, or since. When I get the urge for some silliness, I just watch my favorite eps and that works for me.
I have never seen the movie because it's rep is very different, mainly for some fans making it objectified about Ruri. So I treat it as not existing ( shrug ). |

Nadesico is still in my top 3, the Dub is.. well and ADV dub so meh. But all in all it's held up nicely, POD on the other hand has CGI that looks incredibly dated at this point.
The direct sequel to the TV series, "The blank of 3 years" (sega saturn) without this Prince of Darkness makes little sense as it assumes your familiar with the events that occur. Following POD is another game Nadesico "The Mission" which picks up almost immediately after the events of the movie. Having played both neither are IMO must plays, but the first game does fill in the plot gaps and explain the setup for POD. While the 2nd fills in some of the gaps left by the movie and ends on an open note. It's unfortunate that the closest thing we get to a spiritual successor is Bodacious Space Pirates (same studio and director) .. which while not bad.. is not Nadesico. |

I remember watching this series as a teen but was confused with the whole relationship between Akito and Yurika. I mean, there was harem tease parodies but I never saw Akito and Yurika actually getting closer. In fact, I remember that one episode had two love interests suddenly getting over the guy because what he had with Yurika was special or something. I found the actual romance a bit forced similar to what the stuff Tomino tends to direct.

Oh yes, I have fond memories of watching this when I borrowed the DVDs from a college friend in the mid 2000s. I don't remember a lot of the story...but I remember the killer OP, Ruri's "baka baka" schtick and Akito and Yurika's relationship...up to the scene where spoiler[they are arguing in the last episode and he shuts her up with a kiss.] It's a great moment.^^

Nadesico is good fun, but I don't think it's aged all that well. It's not just that the showspoiler[ has no real ending, it's that the story doesn't feel complex enough to justify that. They could have easily resolved every plotline in the 26 episodes they were given, but instead they kept serving up filler stories that seemed to exist mainly to pad out the story so the show would HAVE to get a sequel.] In the post-Evangelion climate in which the show was made, Nadesico stood out by doing a post-modern show that wasn't miserable and grimdark, but instead actually lighthearted and full of affection for classic giant robot tropes. Back then, it felt rather daring. But nowadays, when meta jokes in anime are common to the point of being boring, the show feels a bit too pleased with itself and the parodies often feel stale.
That said, the show has an excellent cast of characters, great animation and designs which still hold up now, and the main story works very well, when the show actually remembers it exists. And ADV's old English dub is hilarious and has a ton of personality, even if it plays a bit too loose with the translation sometimes. A solid show, but not a classic. Should have wrapped everything up in one cour instead of trying for a franchise, guys. |

MSD was one of the three best farewell/departure gifts given to the mecha fans. In addition to being top-grade mecha series it's also an excellent parody of the genre itself. It perfected the inner workings of Vifam/zz pretty darn good.

Looking forward to watching the Dub on RetroCrush in the coming days. Might get around to watching the Sub version as well when I'm not multitasking. Also one of the few anime shows were both the OP and ED Slap for me.

It's been a while since I've seen it, so I can't say how well it holds up, but I did enjoy the TV series at the time. The movie, not so much. It was just too strong of a tonal change from what I remember.
The opening still holds up though =) Also, MSD=? (Martian Successor Nadesico???) |
