I had no idea that Sony owned a part of Square Enix. Is that why they get timed exclusives.

This is a typical boiler plate response till negotiations are finalised if Square Enix has a potential buyer.
Always remember the vast majority of aquisitions fall through and you hardly ever get any official response.

It's part of why the two companies are close, since Sony kinda bailed them out, but Sony sold their stock in 2014.

Surely the only company out there with the pockets to be able to snap up a company as big as Squenix and with the actual motivation to do it as well is Microsoft?

I think a company such as Tencent might be able to pull something like this off as well.

Or Sony. Been there before, might go back again.
Never say never, but I doubt Squenix, if sold, would go to a company outside Japan

I'd rather Microsoft buy Square than Sony. Sony is easily the worst case scenario.

What? Square Enix has a market cap of less than $8 billion it's a minnow, Activision, EA, Sony, Nintendo and Take Two could all buy Square easily with cash or an all stock transaction.
Sony is willing to spend over $1billion for Crunchyroll which is just a niche streamer there is a lot of money out there.
