Seems like the latest issue of the Shueisha magazine that publishes D.Gray-man alongside Kekkai Sensen (Square Rise?) is teasing a major announcement about the former's narrative more specifically to the July issue. Still I haven't got the actual source to confirm it so it'd be better if somebody else checks it to prove it.

In 5ch's D.Gray-man thread, a 5channeller, who seems to have read the latest issue of Jump SQ. Rise, has said that spoiler[the story of the D.Gray-man manga became different from the story of the D.Gray-man novel.]
The 'narrative' thing you have talked about might be that.
