I just don’t get it. Is Shaman King some popular thing, still? 52 episodes is a lot of faith.

I hope they're only soliciting the BD-boxes that will make up the series' first year, because 52 episodes to cover the entire manga would be way more rushed than I'd like, although not as much as Karakuri Circus and Blade of the Immortal were.

52 means they are most likely adapting 6 manga chapters per episode which is a lot! I have a feeling they are rushing only the introduction arcs and will slow down a little after every character is presented. I wished for this series to get 65 like FMA or a little more though.
The key moments are there and they are skipping, as of episode 1, minor stuffs which are then showed in a small kind of flashback. For now time will tell if this pace will be a disaster or not. I’m still hyped for SK!

I haven't read the manga but I know that 52 episodes for 300 chapters is a lot. I really hope this isn't the entire series and there's gonna be more because I feel like they're not gonna do the material justice if this is it.

They said they were adapting all 35 volumes and 52 episodes seems a bit short for a 35 volume series and I wasn't expected it to be less than the originals 64 episodes and there's no way they'd do the Ushio to Tora approach and skip a large number of chapters because they were instructed to finish it in up to 40 episodes. That would be false advertising so I'll assume there'll be more episodes after.

I checked out the Amazon listings for the BD-boxes, and sadly they do say the four of them will make up the entire series. That's disappointing, but 52 episodes are a luxury compared to other recent manga adaptations that had to cram over 30 or 40 volumes' worth of material into just two or three cours.

Well, at the very least they would've needed a 4-cour, which just makes it more surprising that Netflix still licensed it when they're just going to release it in batches.

This is really disappointing as if done right it could've been the next big series, but between the low episode count and it being locked behind Netflix's way of distribution, any chances of it living up to its potential went out the window. The original anime was 64 episodes, why couldn't the long awaited remake at least get that ? I've never read the manga, so for all I know 52 episodes could be perfect for the kind of material they have to work with, but I'm keeping my expectations low. People seem to think this is only for the first season, so hopefully things will become more clear in the coming months.

It's not. In order to meet that length a lot will need to be skip to get 52 episodes for a 30+ series. I assume a lot of the earlier chapters. If this is true, at least that explains the OP revealing the entire roster of characters.

The first adaptation had 64 episodes. It's not really unusual, Hunter X Hunter ran for 64(Nippon) and 148(Madhouse) consecutive episodes. Rurouni Kenshin had 95, Yu Yu Hakusho had 112 and so on. If anything they don't have a lot of faith.

52 seems like a good, solid number for the whole story. I think it'll be good to have a solid shonen that doesn't drag and hits all the important story beats properly. 4 cours was the minimum to get this right, and I think it'll be fine.
People have to remember that Shaman King was a weekly manga which had a fair amount of fluff that wasn't necessary for the overarching narrative. (Both the original anime and this one skipped the whole middle of vol.1, for example.)
Comparing it to the episode count of the old series doesn't really mean much either, since from what I understand a large chunk of that was anime-original.
I'm glad Kodansha has enough faith in the franchise to bring it back in such a big way!

First episode went through like 75 pages which is a bit more than a third of a volume. I hope they can pull this off. The Dragon Quest remake is pretty fast paced too but it'll probably have 100 episodes at this rate.

In Japan yes. Ignoring that it’s getting a new anime which is a rare thing, it’s a pretty big franchise with tons of spin-offs and sequels. It’s doing pretty well over there.

I don't know about its popularity. I mean there are two versions of the story with Shueisha apparently cancelling due to poor sales or Takei saying he had no idea how to end it for years. Then comes the Kanzenban finale years later, Zero and Flowers but the last one is cancelled permanently for some reason. Then it appears there was a big argument and Takei moved to a new editorial where Shaman King started being milked a lot based on those new spinoffs focused on even Marco rather than Hana's story. Judging by the opening they are gonna try as many popular characters first and then go "Full Metal Alchemist Brotherdhood calm pace"

If it's any indication, episode 1 adapted chapters 1, 2, the last panel of 5 and 143 of the manga.
And apparently, episode 2 will adapt chapters 6 to 8.
So I guess chapters 3 to 5 will be skipped.
