So does that mean you have to get it delivered? If so I highly doubt the cost of shipping is included so that's more money. Unless they will allow for in store pick up.

Is that just for launch day? Or can we go get it like usual on Day 2? Effectively making that the launch day...
I'm sure there's still in-store pick up, and they probably just mean you can't walk in a buy one off the floor, but have to buy it online, then the store will arrange a time for you to come pick it up at or something.
So unless you've already ordered one, there's no point lining up because there's nothing being sold on site.

At least in the US, every storefront I can think of would offer free shipping for an order of that cost, unless you wanted to pay extra for expedited.

It would depend on where you brought it from. Amazon and Wal-mart plus would give you at least free second day shipping.Other sites would most likely give you decent free shipping also.
I understand why Sony is doing this.I am glad to hear they are concerned.

Problem is we already know Sony lost control of stores with the pre-orders, just how likely are people to believe they have control over day-of in-store purchases? And it's not like they've made this message very clear, stores are still going to be swamped with people hoping to get a PS5. I get Playstation newsletters and signed up for their pre-order opportunities way back when (wasn't selected) and this is the first time I've heard about there not being in-store purchases on the Thursday.

In store pick ups are still being allowed. Pre ordered online and then picking it up still okay as you had it scheduled. Mentioned right on Playstation release on this. Just they don't want people to go lining up the night or days before next thursday to try get one if they couldn't online.
Edit: Here is the quote from Playstation blog "Gamers who have pre-ordered for pick-up at their local retailer should still be able to do so at their designated appointment time, under the retailer’s safety protocols. Please confirm the details with your local retailer."

Biggest problem, is that this is a win for the BOTS. The BOTS will be the ones buying up the stock, and then reselling them for a significant mark-up. At least with buying stock in the store, you had a chance of getting it.
It's going to be a dismal Christmas for most PlayStation players, or a poorer one for those that pay to buy from the resellers.
