Didn't know I needed a favorite anime character bio, but there it is: "dried-potato-loving young man." (Sounds like a song title?)
I don't assume the smartphone game will make it out of Japan, but hopefully Crunchyroll picks up the films. I just wish it weren't such an obvious clone – a surfing franchise is a neat idea, it deserves to stand out.
Oh well. I guess they're just signaling to the fujoshi: yes, there will be spuds. Er, studs.

Apologies in advance for singling you out like this, but I really do wish people would stop using "fujoshi" as a blanket term for anyone who's not into anime tiddy. It's kind of one of those words you're only allowed to use if you are one. Kind of.
Points for the pun, though.

Oh, but I really do mean fujoshi! I assume anyone who's keen on its totty will find their way to this show just because it exists, but Free! has drawn a specifically fujoshi fanbase and I'm suggesting Wave!! means to tap into it.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not trying to say there's text or even subtext that directly serves yaoi fans – they make their own – but they've followed the original material loyally & lucratively nevertheless.

All the same, I wouldn't underestimate the buying power of the standard josei demographic. Comiket representation is always a good metric of brand awareness, but the production committee will only ever see profits from the official merch. Which is probably what the game is for.
There's also still a chance this could go the Dive! route and have the focal character go on and on for hours about how straight he is. (How many exclamation points in that title again? Does anyone even remember? Or care?) All that would really do is make everyone bored, but it could happen and has happened, even with a series about dudes in swimsuits.
