I'll be waiting a couple years for the PS5 because history has taught me never to get Sony or MS consoles at launch. Plus the current economic environment isn't exactly the best time to do so. Anyway
-FFXVI: Ah, finally giving it to another team outside of the exclusive club ruled by Kitase and Nomura. Seriously, this is the first new FF announced since 2006 (you heard me right) and it does something genuinely new for the mainline games what with the more grounded setting, the darker tone, and the DMC5-inspired battle system. heck, it even seems to have a mission to tear down old conventions with the tagline outright lambasting the crystals and blowing up the summoner MacGuffin character in the trailer! While there is definitely some FFT and Ogre Battle in there, I'm actually getting more of a vibe from a very specific title: Vagrant Story. The young boy is named Joshua (like Joshua Bardorba) and the woman with the pipe is eerily similar to Inquisitor Heldricht from Vagrant Story. I'm fully expecting Ashley Riot to show up at this point. So yeah, for the first time in ages FF looks exciting again. -Monster Hunter: And another big one as I expected the series would return to the Switch (I mean, they hit 15 million in Japan already). The new traversal options look cool and having a dog companion with you is clearly inspired by the hunting hound idea that was planned for Generations but scrapped. I also like how the Wirebug adds new combat options to expand the movesets. Love the new, yokai-inspired monster designs. Definitely looking forward to it. And I was not expecting Stories 2. I liked the first game but didn't expect a new entry, let alone out of nowhere like this. Hopefully they make getting Mons less of an RNG annoyance and they amp up the story. -Disgaea 6: Wow, jumping ship to the Switch. The Complete titles did pretty well, so good on NIS for keeping with it. -Rune Factory 5: About time, this one has been long overdue. Overall, a very busy week. |

Haven't bought a console at launch since the Gamecube (which had the good sense to launch the morning after the Leonids meteor shower, giving child-me a good excuse to be waiting out all night), and I can't see that changing anytime soon.
Not sure if I'll eventually invest in a new console, or just major upgrades to my PC. Both of them are large enough that I'd probably need to invest in a new piece of furniture to accommodate them alongside the other systems I actively use and which nothing is fully backwards compatible to. FFXVI looks like it could be cool, but i got burned so hard on XV (bought it on launch, liked the opening and atmosphere, hated the shallow, floaty combat, the repetitive, time-wasting quest design, and the massive holes in the story, have no desire to ever touch it again) that I can't imagine picking up another one without hands-on time with it and a decent while to hear about issues people run into first. |

Disgaea 6 is NOT a switch exclusive. It's a strange decision made by NISA as the Japanese trailer is clearly selling a PS4 version. Not only that, the only physical copy NA side is the Collector's Edition priced at $100. Lots of confusing messaging all around and that price is definitely not worth it as you're most likely not getting the full OST or Artbook. As per usual, I'll be waiting until I've accumulated about 5 games or so before purchasing my PS5 so day 1 woes are something I'll just sit back and watch. |

It was definitely a surprise to see Disgaea 6 announced as a Switch exclusive, but with it actually being released in Japan on the PS4 I have to wonder why it's only exclusive in the west :/
Regardless, I'm sure there's going to be a version with all the DLC on multiple platforms down the road and seeing as I'm a few Disgaeas behind, I'm just going to wait for that version this time. As for the PS5, nothing is coming out to buy it at launch, so I'll wait till there's a sizable catalog or that one game I can't get anywhere else and have to play day 1 (and hopefully a black color scheme and/or a redesign :p) |

FFXVI looks a lot better than 15 even if it's just for being a fantasy setting and not more modern/sci-fi setting the last few games have been doing. But at the same time none of the character designs really stand out to me and the combat looks completely unfamiliar to Final Fantasy. I suppose the franchise is Final Fantasy in name only at this point.
Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2 were great to see. I always did like Stories and felt that side series had potential, and the new one looks way better since it's not limited to the 3DS anymore. Rise also looks great and non-traditional, which makes sense since World is still popular and fulfilling the main Monster Hunter fix. I've been looking forward to Rune Factory 5 for ages ever since it was announced. Rune Factory 4 was my favorite farming/RPG game and when the original studio went under I was sad the series was gone, but ever since it was revive 5 has been looking great. Hopefully it delivers Disgaea 6 is nice to finally see. Not much else to say on it, other than the numbers are always fun! For the other stuff, nothing really jumps out that I need a PS5 day 1. Most of the games are either on PC or PS4 or something I'm not interested in. The only non-anime one that looked interesting was the Harry Potter one, especially if it's an actual RPG and maybe has some life-sim elements to it like Three Houses or Persona. But licensed games still have the curse of usually being mediocre at best if Avengers is anything to go on, so I'll keep my expectations low for it. |

I'll be waiting on getting a PS5 due to price and I want to see if there will be actual PS5 games I want to play and not just upscales of older gen. I mean, I'm definitely interested in getting the new Ratchet and Clank. I'm also slightly intrigued with FFXVI which is something since I haven't been interested in the franchise in years.

PS5: Definitely plan on getting one, just not any time soon. I waited 2 years to get a PS3, and 3 years for a PS4. The launch looks underwhelming (Miles Morales looks great, but that's it), and it'll take awhile before we see a steady stream of really great games.

Yeah, I'm... not really interested in the new consoles. It was all I could do to save up for a Switch. Even $300 for a new console is too steep, especially if the games are $70. $60 is a steep upsell for a game, especially if there is $20 dollars worth of DLC or season passes (BotW runs you upwards of $80 with the DLC, and Smash Bros is easily $100 if you want the game and all the fighters).
I'm fine with the Switch for now. I really can't afford anything else. |

What even is Final Fantasy? The franchise changes up its mythology every game, every installment basically does something new, becoming its own different thing. Calling things "FF in name-only" is a fundamental misunderstanding of the franchise. Hell I recall IX was an intentional throwback to a more fantasy setting after its previous games being primarily cyberpunk/dieselpunk. This franchise always changes things up. |

I continue to be struck by how self-samey all games showcased for PS5 tend to be: mostly action RPGs (though even more so at the previous event) and all of them grimdark as hell. All the M-rated gore shots from this week's event are just sort of running together for me.
The last time I got a console at launch was PS2 (yeah, I'm old) and the launch games for PS2 were much more diverse: traditional sports (Madden), extreme sports (SSX), fighting (Tekken, DOA2), racing (Ridge Racer), FPS (Unreal Tournament), RPGs (Summoner), even a putative puzzle game (Fantavision). At the moment, I don't see anything for PS5 that excites me, though I'll admit I'm a laggard at this point… I only just got a PS4 Pro last year. So I'll probably be playing 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim and grinding through a few more NieR; Automata endings well into next year before I look again to see if there's anything to make me pull the trigger on a PS5. |

Basically I want a PS5 ASAP because I want to be able to play next years game of the year, Horizon, at launch and in its best form and there's no telling what type of next gen console drought we're in for next year. I'll settle for the PS4 version if I have to of course, but I really don't want to.
So of course i was annoyed when I was watching stores after the presentation Wednesday, signing up for store pre-order alerts and the like, only for Sony to say the orders wouldn't start until Thursday so I stopped check around 7:30pm... only to find out Thursday morning that pre-orders started to open up Wednesday night around 8pm. It's only made worse by none of the stores sending me the email alerts I signed up for including Sony who was emailing people to sign up for alerts to order directly, but apparently the people that got chosen for that found out a while ago even though they still let you sign up as of Wednesday. I'm not going to throw a tantrum and go into a nerd rage over not getting an order in, but this was the first time I've pre-ordered a new console since the Dreamcast so I'm at least a little annoyed. I somehow doubt there'll be any on shelves anywhere on launch day, not that I have anywhere to check around me other than Walmart. Emerje |

You should be careful using the word "monster" in relation to video games. Those bright green swill hawkers will sue you.

Am I the only person who remembers when the overpriced cable monster people would sue instead? God, I'm old. |

In fact, the person you responded to is also old enough to remember. I also remember the quality of their cables was certainly not worth the extra cost, especially when we moved from the analog era to the digital one. |

People keep forgetting that one of the (now officially) extra benefits of Game Pass Ultimate is being able to play without having to buy a console (via Android devices right now --Android smartphones, Android TV, Chromebooks-- but will eventually expand onto other devices later)
