IDK why the article doesn't include links to the app. Please update the article with the links since the app is ridiculously hard to search for in the App Store & Play Store because they chose a generic name.
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pocket-comics-premium-webtoon/id1492654676 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.comico Full list of series & more: http://www.nhn-comico.com/news/index.nhn?m=read&docid=10853625 Edited: added iOS link, thanks @dcmkp2 Last edited by kpossibles on Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:58 am; edited 2 times in total |

They close down Comico Indonesia last year, fail to capture the market from Line Webtoon Indonesia... I hope they will back to Indonesian market with different strategies.
The link is on the NHN site. <App Store ダウンロードページ> https://itunes.apple.com/jp/app/id721512660 <Google Play ダウンロードページ> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.comico |

Here you go. It's the first result when you search 'Pocket Comics' on the US app store. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pocket-comics-premium-webtoon/id1492654676 The selection is rather barebones for now, but I'm super pleased to see Kakao 79% on it since it's one of my favorite webtoons. I can only hope the update batches are more than 1 chapter a week because the original is more than 200 chapters already.... |

Annnd that app won't be available in Europe. Europe is always snubbed, all over and over again. So much end piracy. |

Tried it for the BL
(Stanning 101 is great) Pros -4-8 chapters seem free for most series -Good quality, translation -Smooth and easy Cons -the dreaded coins...10 coins is 99cents, bonus coins at the other increments (300 + 100 bonus coins is 29.99) -Ads - can read some chapters by viewing an ad first (30seconds) -hour waits - hourly wait on those chapters that can be free with ads. -unlocked/read chapters go locked in 7 days |

Seems they gave up on using Smackjeeves as a platform for their Comico comics. For those not in the know, here's how they ruined a beloved platform for webcomics: https://www.webcomicnetwork.com/Articles/SmackJeeves_Outrage_Mass_Exodus_From_site

Was just about to mention that, since I recognized some of their titles and realized it was the same NHN that ran Smackjeeves into the ground...*sigh* It doesn't look like they even had the intention of properly utilizing Smackjeeves so what was it all even for?? |

So the chapters you pay to unlock you don't get to keep? |

From the app Help section: "Rental chapters can also be purchased with coins. After purchase, you gain unfettered access to the chapters you've purchased." |

I'd prefer to pay for temporary access, say US $1-2 to access a volume for one week. It's very rare that I want to reread a manga, and the industry seems to expect that, with its preference for permanent sales at higher prices, which to me are only worthwhile for favorites. I don't like wonky free solutions that are neither satisfying to use, nor convincingly make much difference to the industry or authors. I recall reading that the vast majority (90%?) of Crunchyroll profits come from paying subscribers, not from their much larger audience of free users watching ads.
You can pay for temporary access to the library of a video streaming service, or a music streaming service, or buy a ticket to see a movie once, and in each case you're left with nothing in your possession at the end, and that's fine. But for most manga, there's no way pay to read it once. My reading Gunnm on ComiXology was sort of like that, but at $6/month for unlimited access to everything covered by their subscription plan, it's no wonder most of their series ask readers to pay full price per volume after the opening free samples. The number of people willing and able to spend $5-10 per volume will probably be going down worldwide for a while. |
