So having finished the first season of the anime, I have to ask...is this series an example of "it gets so much better!"? I mean don't get me wrong, I genuinely enjoyed watching it for the most part, but writing-wise it's been absolutely bog-standard boilerplate shounen thus far, albeit with a bit more gore than usual. Outside of the anime adaptation's high production values, the series hasn't done much to set itself apart from the many other entries in its genre that I've seen, and I can't really see where its meteoric rise is coming from. Does it mix things up at all further down the line?

Bottom line, as long as it does EVERYTHING good enough, nothing NEW needs to happen for a series to be stupid popular.

So yeah, it uses a lot of common tropes in shonen mangas but in a more effective way than My Hero Academia.

It does not. In fact, the final (?) arc is probably the most disappointing of all.

New and original =/= good. It how a series use those standard tropes is what make it standout. But yeah, the anime basically adapt the weakest part of the manga.

Uhhhhhh rather different shows there. I honestly can’t really see much comparison aside from “Both have fights”.

I feel the exact same way towards this series. It's a good show, but I'm not in love with it like everyone else is. And I fail to see what makes it special enough to enjoy the insane levels of success it's getting.

Extremely popular things don’t have to be exceptional or even that “different”. They just have to be good. Or at the very least, tolerable. It helped immensely that Ufotable, an acclaimed studio, really accentuated the manga in every possible way.
The series does get quite better. And for a while I even considered it a great series. And then the last forty of so chapters messes that all up. You’ll come to see why it’s such an enormously popular yet polarizing series in time I’m sure.
Side note: The series is becoming the new essential “normie” anime for this current generation. The series is extremely popular in middle school (even elementary schools). Many celebrities who don’t have much pedigree or history of watching manga have shouted it out as being great. So it’s been interesting to see it’s rise.

While it was a very decent shounen in my estimation (minus the 2 screaming characters), what catapulted it’s reputation was the art and animation, specially in the latter episodes. It was rather more accomplished than in most comparable series.
