And here I thought Duke Togo the character was a legend. Massive props to Takao Saito for such a long (and ongoing) run, and in such an unusual subject matter, too (International Intrigue, which probably lost some shine after the Cold War, but has a real mature appeal). To the topic at hand, I would say now is a good time for most in the manga and anime industry to do the same thing and take a break. Would readers mind terribly if publishers took time to perhaps call up some old stuff and use that in an issue or two to provide some nostalgia and some space?

I remember Takao Saito saying a few years back he has a plan for the ending of the series, too, when the time comes. I think Golgo 13 got about as much of a celebration as it was going to get with 50-episode 2008-2009 anime. It could have had a bigger budget and a more consistent English dub, but it was serviceable toward giving a broader view of the manga's content.
And yeah, I think breaks are inevitable with what's going on.

I think that's a fantastic idea. No, I wouldn't mind at all. Not only is the nostalgia nice, but it's always possible to get turned onto an older title which you weren't aware of before.

At some point, there wasn't much oversight apparently, and the English dub producers decided to start lampooning the material. Like, the dubbers threw in ad-libbed joke lines and outtake-type material into the show. I recall some line very close along the lines of "She was an actress in a low-budget acne commercial, like The Simpsons." Just total nonsense and disrespect for dubbing the show at random points. IIRC, this actually occurred, to a lesser extent, in the dub of Xam'd Lost Memories, too. They had the same ADR director/script writer, but I don't know who decided to make fun of the material.

Recalling the time period in question (around 2010 or so), I wonder if it may have simply been a "loose" period for the ADR there. I can't say one way or the other, but the discussion reminds me of another dub studio that also ran "fast and loose" with adaptations: Phuuz Entertainment.

Really, you can put the blame almost entirely on the director for Golgo's dub, who also directed Xam'd's dub: Steven Foster.
By the end of Foster's time in directing dubs, he seemed to just not give a damn about anything anymore, resulting in the dubs he handled usually winding up being terrible, if not simply disrespecting the material of the show itself. His Guin Saga dub is infamous for doing the same exact thing as Golgo, i.e. devolving into self-parody in the second half.

Yeah, that makes sense. As I recall, these ridiculous lines would be thrown in further into each series. For Golgo 13, I went and tracked the line down I mentioned. It's a little different, but still goofy: "Question: What did you tell her? --- Response: That you're an agent from the Philippine film industry and were seeking to scout her after seeing her in a low-budget acne commercial, like Simpsons." There were others, but this is the one I distinctly remember, and it was from episode 19. So, by the second DVD volume, things were breaking down. With Xam'd, I don't know the episode number, but I remember noticing it two or three times in the second DVD collection--so, second half of series.

Yeah I watched the TV anime on some service that I only offered it in English, I don't remember what it was but I think it was Crackle. The dub was especially bad in that all of the voice actors sounded like they came off the street and not something more polished like you would get from say Funimation these days. It sounded like it was a bad dubbing job from there 80s AKA the dark age of dubbing.
That aside I loved the anime movie, the Killer Bee OVA and the manga stories I have read (not all, the English translation I read gave us 'greatest hits' stories and did not present the stories in order, same thing they did with Astro Boy). I didn't care for the TV anime much. The episode where Golgo 13 took on a job to kill a football player still bothers me. Maybe it was a manga story, but the overall sense I got from Golgo 13 is that he took jobs that served a purpose of sorts. He just killed the football player for money. I suppose living in the U.S. I may have some disjointed opinion of what Golgo 13 is and he'll kill anyone for a price or maybe I'm too soft. Still bugs me though.
