Oh, great. Japan turned Last Exile into pro-whaling propaganda. Skip it.

This is still one of the most ridiculous stances I hear about this series all the time. People really need to stop assuming the creator's intent. It's dragons and fantasy, I wish people could properly separate reality from fiction.

Even if in the off chance the original creator is pro-whaling, that's one person and his views don't reflect the entirety of Japan. His views don't necessarily reflect the views of the people making the anime, or the fans. I and several of my friends greatly enjoy the manga, not one of us is pro-whaling. It's extremely generalizing and ridiculous to say "Japan" made this series, an entire country full of many people that don't even know this exists. People that all have their own opinions and views.

I'm pretty sure it's Makoto Furukawa.

The show will stream exclusively on Netflix.

Insert "ahh sh!t, here we go again" meme.

Japan: Hey Netflix we've got this new Anime series and it's really good
Netflix: Is it another ugly looking CGI title from Polygon Pictures, where all the charterers look like retarded puppets
Japan: Well er yyyeah it... yes it is
Netflix: HERE IS ALL THE MONEY
Japan: Shocked

Sadly, the trend seems to be going in the opposite direction. Seems like more "attacks" on works of fiction that contain "problematic" themes, if they were real world settings, seem to be happening. And then the creators seems to get slapped with labels of being pro-this or that.

As for this PV, this is the CG work I don't mind. Will check this series out. Only downside is that this will be on Netflix, so I'll probably end up spoiling myself on it, and then only end up watching it depending on what kind of ending the anime gets. Laughing

Drifting Dragons definitely was not something I particularly wanted to see be done in CG (granted I don't think there's ANY manga I've read where I would have actively wanted that) since one of the biggest appeals to me of the manga is it's artwork but I also get why it'd be super difficult to animate stuff like he innards of the ship or even some of the dragons with full on 2D animation.

I'm not really sure if I'll watch the show since I still have the manga I can read and the CG comes off as pretty hit or miss to me, but if it gets more people into the series then I'll at least be happy for that.

As someone who is into sailing, so also stuff like singing the sea shanties including those about whaling, and reading Moby Dick etc., there is big difference for me between old-time whalers risking their life fighting mighty beasts and modern whaling which is just harmful but safe and profitable business hiding under guise of "tradition". So far the Drifting Dragons seemed to me more like the fantasy about former than praise of the latter.

Ah yes sort of of like hunting big game, there's killing a bear with bare hands and then there's shooting a lion from 200yrds away with a high powered rifle. Ones being a brave warrior and the others just commercialised mass slaughter.
