How did Netflix get this movie over Crurnchyroll who controls the master license of the series and has the compilation films? So much for Kabaneri fans getting to complete their home video collections.

The most likely explanation is that Netflix offered more than Crunchyroll which is why Netflix got the movie. The series was originally licensed by Amazon and the sequel movie has been licensed by Netflix. I am hoping that Netflix will get the same VAs for the English dub.

Well Funimation released the first season, and they have also released at least one Netflix anime on home video (The Seven Deadly Sins), so there is a chance that Funimation could get the distribution rights for home video release!

There is also the possibility that they don't dubbed it. This isn't a Netflix original (I think).

This is as much of an original Netflix anime as The Seven Deadly Sins is, as it was not originally broadcast on the platform but was brought stateside that way in a batch several months after the television broadcast. Either way, Netflix dubs all of the anime they license straight for their site. Unfortunately, they're not fully reliable on voice actors, as seen with the changes in voice actors for certain series (Bryce Papenbrook and Christopher Smith play Devilman and Ryo in 009 vs Devilman, but were replaced by Griffin Burns and Kyle McCarley for Devilman Crybaby; at the same time, Cristina Vee played both versions of Miki Makimura_>

Only the first season of Seven Deadly Sins has been released on BD so far so I don't know we can use that as a positive sign for the Kabaneri movie and season one first came out on BD a year ago. Netflix also nabbed the second season of Saki K after Funimation had the first season. Only the first season of Saki K was dubbed and released on BD in the US. The second season was sub only and is still streaming only.

so I very much doubt this means anything at all, regarding CR/Funi getting the license as usual

Yeah, that is something that bugs me. I don't know if Netflix has refused to sub license for physical release, which I could see them doing to push subscriptions, or if maybe companies like Funimation and Sentai decided that Netflix wanted too much money for just the physical rights. Netflix doesn't have any interest in doing its own physical releases, so at this point it seems like I might not ever get to buy a copy of Kakegurui.
Netflix could dub the Kabaneri movie since that was an LA dub in the first place, but the situation with Saiki K. shows that they don't necessarily feel like they need to dub a show at all. The total recasting of Eva also suggests that they don't have a problem with recasting, either, though I see that as far less likely here. Honestly, I'm more worried about season 2 of Takagi. Like Saiki, the first season was licensed and dubbed by Funimation, so there is a good chance they'll eventually bring it here sub-only. I suppose they could decide they want to contract with Funimation for the dubs of those, but something tells me Funimation wouldn't do it without streaming rights of their own, and I don't see Netflix agreeing to that.
