I enjoy the light novels and so far the anime adaptation is looking like a great comedy and is one of the better animated late night shows of the season. The light novels aren't quite a parody but they are very comedic with a healthy dose of fanservice. I think that the panty shots with Wise were a good example of fanservice and reminded me of the casual approach that was seen in Rosario + Vampire. The fanservice with Mamako on the other hand is a little eyebrow raising and while it was meant to be over the top in the light novels I think they put even more emphasis on it in the anime. This might be the best fanservice show of the season though whether that it is considered to be good or bad will depend on the viewer. Also in my opinion Masato and Wise are both rude when we first meet them but that is because they are working through various issues which will be seen in future episodes.

Minus the slime stuff in the episode 2, I am enjoying this series so far as well as the dynamic between Masato and Mamako. Hopefully we learn more about their family life pre-game and possibly where his father is since that might help more with their current relationship. Also hope it doesn't go the Oedipus route...

this does not go the incest route do not worry, we have confirmation on that all ready.
Personally I really dislike the kid in episode 1 but that has more to do with me I am pretty sure. I am curious to see more of this show.

Damn, this was some quality review-writing. I caught onto all your clever wordplay.
As someone who typically skips isekai on principle, I tried this one hoping for an interesting take on the trend. I've gotten...some of that. But I really need more mom humor. Not that cringe-inducing slime scene.

Meh, kinda wish they'd push the concept further and make something unique rather than just a traditional isekai with one of the character being a mom. Why not have all the party member they recruit be male character to give Mamako an harem instead of the gary stu du jour (does anyone even remember is name without having to look it up?)? Why not have the son be the one who get all the weird fan service/panty shoot? Or how about have him not being a giant jerk and genuinely have a good relationship with his mom?

Well seeing as how the purpose of the game is to mend that relationship, that would defeat the purpose of the story in general.

sorry folks.. this title had a high skeeve factor to it coming in. The slime scene between the MC and his mom crossed the line that I want no part of.
First title of the season I am dropping.

When they introduced Wise, my wife and I looked at each other and both commented at the same time that her character design and personality was reminiscent of Lina Inverse from Slayers. (Especially with the cape.) Then the show went ahead and made the reference explicit.

The game is a vehicle for the story, not the other way around.

MILF for the win! Now we only need more onee-san anime, and Ane Naru Mono by the same illustrator would fit the bill quite nicely

The official unoffical name for this series is Okaasan Online. You can abreviate it to OO, it is a good handle

It's the vehicle but also the purpose of the story. The way to clear the game is by becoming closer with your mother, so it's a bit of both.

You're in luck, by the end of the first book he's already starting to reflect on stuff he's said, to the point at the start of book 2, when he says something a bit rude he immediately realises it and feels bad
Quote: | It feels like she exists just so Masato has someone to pick on |
Wise soon ends up making wisecracks on Masato just as much as he does on her. They end up having a funny friendship.
I've been looking forward to this anime. I've been sort of following the concept of this show since the novels were first published in Japan, and nabbed the first novel pretty quick. I really enjoy the book (the way it simultaneously creates yet diffuses cliche'd events is pretty amusing). I haven't seen episode 2 yet, but episode 1 was pretty much all I wanted. I'm looking forward to seeing Wise as she's my favourite character so far...
re the oedipus possibility, in book 2, when Masato and Wise are discussing the game, Wise makes a joke about how it sees the only way to clear the game is for Masato to develop an oedipus complex lol

I'd be up for that... though the ear cleaning scene would be kind of awkward animated...

Hey, I remember being a supporter of the first season of My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute as it was a parody of incest stories only to be backstabbed by the second season.
Now, this one... It's not "Do You Love Your Mom's Two Hit Multi-Target Attacks?" as it should be if it was 100% innocent but "Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two Hit Multi-Target Attacks?" Defender's response "Well, you see, the original Japanese is using the platonic/familial definition of love rather than an eros/lust reading." Uh huh. It's still framing the situation as a question though. There's a pitfall here, a gap where the whole situation can fall precipitously... namely if you don't love your Mom in the family way then how do you love her?
And I'm not going to believe the direction of any of this, even if said directly by the creators, until the last page of the last volume. I've got eyes, I can see Masato try to save Mamako by grabbing her right boob with one hand while Wise grabs the other.
So, to sum up, this is milf porn without the actual point. I don't hate it but I can point out scenes in the first two episodes where the leads are confused they're not a couple.

My problem with this series is that it has some things in it that alone I would like, that I just don't feel mesh well together. Just as I like soda, and I like pizza, but I wouldn't want to pour soda all over my pizza? I can do fanservice, I can enjoy strong female leads, and I can enjoy family bonding stories... but the way it is all thrown together here is skeevy as all get out.
I will state I did enjoy the sage's threat to chain kill and resurrect. I am not sure why she hates her mother so much; I'm assuming it's because at some point the sage's mother told the sage "Put on some pants and stop showing your underwear to the camera every 5 minutes." And what this show seems to think is "comedy" is what many of us elsewhere call "awkward and concerning." Hahaha, when they go to explore their first dungeon, the son accidentally grabs the mom's breaths, how hilarious! And then he has to deal with her being naked, which he totally hates, because it's stealing from his limelight.
I really, *really* hope that there's some sort of background reason why the merchant's response to "you are going to marry my son" is "yay! I'll do my best to be a good wife!" and not "Uh, no lady, I said I wanted to join your party and not your family, what the hell." And I know, this series is in some ways sort of a harem show, kind of, but the setup of "we're going to tag along with mom and son" make it hard to focus away from there struggles, so the harem aspect doesn't work well there as well.
But hey, each 25-odd minute episode can be reduced to like 15 or 16 screenshots, most of which being lewd, so at least in that one can keep up with the show in a matter of minutes instead of a couple of hours.

I agree that Mary Sue's protagonists are a big problem in modern anime, but when, already after a one paragraph, the reviewer says that he is perfectly fine with such a protagonist, if it’s a female character, I want to twist my face.
At the same time, I’m surprised that only one person noticed how sarcastic this anime with its attitude to all this set of imoutu-titles. Because almost all of this title is essentially one big milf-parody of such content. Of course, this is not incest work (at least, as far as I know), but if you watched at least 2-3 imouto-anime, then you must understand me.
In any case, I fully support the idea of adding more milf to anime. Into heterosexual, lesbian, or just not romantic way. Whatever the genre, the industry is still critically lacking well-written mature female characters. Not even speaking about, that a similar trend in theory would help open the way for the adaptation of the many good josei manga.
