This was one of my Fav Classic 80's Anime, I first caught this anime along time ago about like 6 or 7 years ago on the Sci-Fi Channel on that saturday Morning.
The Anime followed some of the weird Bizzare adventures of the Super Fast Red Head School Girl [A-ko] and her Best friend crybaby yellow Haired [C-ko] in very funny situations loaded with tons of Spoofs and Parodies of Popular Classic 80's Anime like Fist of the Northstar, Kimagure Orange Road, and alot of others while A-ko is always one step ahead of avoiding her Rival B-ko,the purple haired girl who;s rich and has tons of Machinery. This anime had me laughing, and so Finnaly, I managed to find the complete boxset of all of project A-ko animes including the first [Project A-Ko Movie], The OAV series[Project A-ko 2: Love and Robots], and the Alternate Retelling OAV Project-Ko Vs One of my Fav Scenes spoiler[ was the final episode in Project A-Ko 2: love and Robots where C-Ko was watching a Movie which was a Parody of the scene in the first Kimagure Orange Road Movie: I want to return to that day] My fav songs from the First Project A-Ko movie are Dance Away and the ending theme Follow your Dreams The Boxset I got also came with the entire Ost Cd, and I love it, so who else has seen this classic? |

I saw it just because I thought I should... To tell you the truth though, I didn't really like it. Probably because I've seen everything they did in the movie(s) before in more recent anime, just done far better. I still recognize it as a classic and one of the staples of the genre, but that didn't prevent me from giving it just a "decent"...

If there is one anime that I consider my entryway into otakudom, it is Project A-Ko. After some gruelling years of college in the early 90's I decided to take a break. So I had all this time on my hands and suddenly felt the urge to watch some anime that I became familiar with as a kid. Then I rented Project A-Ko and my life was changed forever, itwas perfect for me at the time. It was funny but not too over the top for a budding anime fan such as myself, had great artwork and music and the Ocean Group version of the dub was top notch (I don't like the newer dub that Manga Ent did - everybody has southern accents). I think I've watched Project A-Ko in excess of a dozen times, and it remains to this day my most favorite non-Ghibli film.

Project A-Ko was one of the first anime movies that I ever rented (in addition to the infamous M.D. Geist), back when Blockbuster was my only source for anime. I recently saw it and other A-Ko movies on AZN TV, and it was a nice nostalgic moment. It is kind of dated, but I personally enjoy that kind of style from the 80s over some of today's flashier stuff.
My favorite moment was seeing B-Ko's father dressed in the ridiculous bikini-like suit, and his back breaks as he tries to support an enormous ship. Not sure which of the movies that was from. |

Maybe its because I saw Excel Saga first, or maybe because I'm more well versed in new-school anime, but I watched 3 of the 6 project A-KO movies once and really kinda lost interest. I love parody in general, but not getting the parody does kinda remove the humor.

Aside from the original Project A-Ko movie, the other installments were more of a disappointment for me as they didn't live up to the spontainiety, creativity and style of the original (actually, I have still not even seen the "versus" OAVs). I guess it was a big suprise for me because I never watched any parody anime before Project A-ko. Yes most of the in-jokes and anime references required you to be familiar with lots of other series, but back then I was completely inexperienced so for me it was just random and crazy humor . Plus even if I felt "out of the loop" the artwork, lovable characters, intense action and music were enough to truly hook me in.

Project A-ko was one of the first anime I had seen after I was really hooked - it was also the first VHS I bought. I liked it a lot then more than ten years ago, but I didn't get really affectionate towards it until I saw many more titles in the meantime and understood more of the parodies involved. It went from a 'typical', sci-fi anime to a successful parody.
The music in the original film is absolutely fantastic, too. The score fits the different areas - the morning themes are calming, when A-ko's running to school is pounding, and the music focusing on the mecha sounds, well, mechanical. Probably the best feature I love about the soundtrack is that it is so dated. It screams "I'm from the eighties, so what?" and it emphesises other dated aspects of the film. I like the OAVs that continue the "main" story (Project A-ko 2-4; Daitokuji Financial, Cinderella Rhpasody, Final/Kanketsuhen) fair enough, but the downgrade in animation and a story that is more self contained and not venturing much in the way of parody just didn't much have the same feeling that the original film had. The subsequent 'Blue vs. Grey' storylines weren't as good, I thought. What I like about Project A-ko is that an anime fan can sit down and watch it, find the easter eggs and references and enjoy it on the level of an anime fan but a non-fan can sit down and watch it, laugh at how silly/stupid it seems, and still enjoy it. That flexibility between viewers is something that I don't find in many of its contemporary productions or amongst its successors. Drew "Suiko" Sutton http://akibaren.blogspot.com |
