Well, if anyone is wondering how deep Eureka 7 is, this volume has some prime examples. Renton's dream(which must be viewed more than once for better understanding. Well, for me, anyway), Eureka's slow slip into depression, & Holland's unexpected reaction towards Renton after something happens with the prospector are three strong examples in my opinion. I love a story that makes you think. Eureka 7 has left my brain tied up in knots on several occasions. Gotta love that Smile

Oh, and Happy New Year!

It's too bad they haven't introduced the storyline or the character motivations for the show at this point.

Good episodes on that DVD, though I recall that Cave Arc being woefully slower-paced than usual. Granted, they're still awesome. But it's a shame the DVD 4 cuts off the Cave Arc. They should've put Episode 19 on it too, since that's the last episode of the Cave Arc.

I've been hesitant to try this series out because it seemed like another reiteration of EVA, though unlike most people who would pass it out - the surfing mecha thing kind of kept bugging me to just check the thing out Anime hyper

Seeing how the first four DVDs received positive reviews from ANN, my decision has finally been made.

You've made a wise decision. E7 is currently my favorite out there. The music, the animation, everything. I'm especially a music nut, and the compositional music is good. Naoki Sato composed well.

Yes, the music is definitely in my top 10 list of soundtracks.

Raven Shinobi: As you watch, you will come to realize that the only thing Eureka 7 has in common with EVA is a young boy piloting a mecha. Definitely one of the best releases of 2006-07.

Hm, I can think of a few similiarities other than a young boy piloting mecha:

- "living" mecha
- bossy crazy girl piloting one (Anemone pilots TheEnd)
- main protagonist goes crazy when he kills
- main protagonist runs away
- quiet, detached, blue-haired girl with little personality
- cute animal character (Pen Pen/Gulliver)

You're right - it's nothing like Evangelion. Evangelion had a set up within the first half of the series and didn't take nearly twenty-something episodes to recycling the same misunderstandings between Renton and Eureka and have it called "character development" by its fans. Evangelion started out strong and got weak, then redeemed itself with EoE. Eureka 7 started out weak, got strong, then got weak again.

"One of the best releases of 2006-07" makes me sad.

Shinji remained emo for the entire series, including "End of Evangelion". Renton never was emo, and never became emo.

"Emo" is a failsafe excuse word for people unable to discuss things properly.

Enjoy your failure.

Okay then, I'll create a new word to describe Shinji's pathetically negative viewpoint. Let's just say he's "emin", short for "emotionally insecure". Does that make you happy?

My point is that Shinji remained pathetically angsty for the entire series run, and even to the point where he sat around crying while his friends were dying from his inaction.

Renton was only really angsty once, and I believe that was for a brief moment after the end of the Beams arc(not spoiling). He moved on from that. Shinji could take a lesson from that.

Please don't let this turn into another "Everything rips off Evangelion" topic. Because let's face it, Evangelion rips off the Bible, and most mecha anime that came before it.

Renton is a imbecilic, niave idealist who takes too long to learn any lesson taught to him and always holds onto his past as some little teddy bear. With luck, he ends up succeeding because of the hard work and sacrifices of others. He's like Vash the Stampede with less charisma (ironic, consider who his dub VA is) - a pacifist who only cares about himself and his own goals and can't see how they hurt other people. People like Holland, Talho, Eureka, Ray, Charles, they were the ones doing all his heavy lifting for him, leading him by the hand throughout most of the series.

Shinji Ikari sees the big picture. He may seem to act selfishly, and for a good part of the series and the movie, he does. But he's given the enormous burden of the world on his shoulders. He can't refuse, because he KNOWS he's the only one who can do what he does as well as he does it, but every time, EVERY TIME he pilots his EVA, he's subject to physical, mental, and emotional pain. He's hardly ever thanked, he's manipulated, nobody shows much sympathy for his pain, and even when he shows slight confidence, it's seen as cockiness and treated with punishment or deridement. In the end, though, he chooses what he does because if he didn't suffer so much throughout the series, his decision wouldn't have meant as much.

And I wouldn't claim that E7 "rips off" Evangelion. I was just arguing that it has some interesting similarities, which are either pure coincidence or simply a case of Evangelion being part of the consciousness of anime producers to a such a high degree, they don't realize it.

Shinji is the same way. Except Shinji never really learned a lesson. He kept the exact same 2-dimensional whining bs for the entire series. The only real times Shinji ended up succedding were when things were taken beyond his control, namely when EVA-01 went Berserk.

Define "2-dimensional whining bs". I bet you can't. You don't have any real argument, just a bunch of general statements.

Whereas Renton will constantly spout the same nonesensical beliefs even as he tears into an enemy mecha mercilessly, Shinji actually cares about people and even one of the Angels. He just doesn't know how to react to people who suddenly need him after a long time of being cast aside. Shinji doesn't have some foolish idealstic passion and he's not given the same love and tenderness that Renton recieves.
