Akagi Gets Sequel Manga Set 20 Years Later

The new manga's story is set 20 years after the ending of Akagi.

新作「闇麻のマミヤ」の物語は赤木がこの世を去ってから20年後を舞台に描かれる。

Not after the ending of Akagi manga. It's set 20 years after Akagi's death.

And Akagi's death was depicted NOT in Akagi manga but in Fukumoto's other manga, Ten: Tenhou Doori no Kaidanji. The story of Akagi is set in the '50s, '60s while Ten is in the '80s, '90s. Akagi's death is in 1999, which means the new manga's story is set in this year, 2019. (The wordplay makes more sense.)
So the new manga is not really a sequel. It's just a story in the same world with new protagonist. (Akagi isn't a protagonist in Ten too. Akagi manga is a spin-off of Ten.)
