I pick Eureka Seven, but its nice that anime gets mention in something as mainstream as this.

From the article:

We revisit some of the most unforgettable moments from the 2006 TV season
...
...
"Samurai 7" for being the best new anime of the year. |
While I enjoyed Samurai 7, I'd have to agree that there are several series that would have been a far more suitable choice for "best" new anime (E7 among them). Perhaps it gains some extra air of credibility for recommendation from the mainstream press because it was on A&E or maybe because it was based on a classic that tipped the scales in its favor <cough>Gankutsuou</cough>. It straddles that delicate ground of giving a nod to an up-and-coming medium while still remaining a safe recommendation to the general public and being a choice that risks minimal criticizm from peers in the press.
How being the "best new anime of the year" qualifies as an unforgettable moment of 2006 is beyond me [and it makes me wonder if the author/contributor has actually seen the series] but I suppose that any press is good press even if it smacks a bit of being an obligatory gesture towards a medium that [frustratingly] seems to hover just outside of the consciousness of the mainstream entertainment media.
Either way, here's to hoping that the anime shell cracks in 2007 and unleashes it goodness upon the unenlightened masses. Should this be too ambitious a hope for the coming year then so be it; it sounds like 2007 is going to be a great year for anime fans and will no doubt top an already great 2006.
There you have it....perhaps my final crackpot theory of the year. Happy new year everyone![/quote]

Hey, its based on a Kurosawa film and it was aired on IFC so it automatically MUST be the best of the year...right?

Did they happen to miss "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya?" Or are they talking about anime shown here in the US?

Uhh, they're probably referring to anime series that's been released on DVD and/or broadcasted on TV in the U.S.

if that's the case then I'd have to go with "Tsukuyomi ~ Moon Phase ~" or "Kamichu!"

Samurai 7 finished airing here in Canada last week....I thought it was extremely generic .
This isn't the series I would show to someone who has never watched any anime before...I'd be afraid of it turning them away from the medium very quickly.

The term is sarcasm...
Bleu has been around a while and is generally intelligent in his posts... the occasional sarcasm can be forgiven.

I don't know about you guys, but I really hated Samurai 7.
I thought Basilisk did a better job with samurais.
