I’m fairly sure there’s been a golf anthology before because I have memories of Jonathan Clements doing covering it for his column in Neo Magazine.
—edit— Not imagining it, although goodness knows what issue it was: https://schoolgirlmilkycrisis.com/2009/09/15/manga-snapshots/ —edit 2— Actually, as it happens, that particular column was reproduced in Schoolgirl Milky Crisis which makes looking it up as trivial as openingthe Kindle app. As of 2008, “Golf Lesson Comic” had been running for 18 years and 211 monthly issues and is still running now: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B07NRKG7NK |

I have thought for some time that a series about an up-and-coming female golfer has potential. When I searched for manga about golf, the only one that came close was an ecchi story about a girl who agrees to wear scanty outfits on the course in return for a subsidy from their manufacturer. Not really what I had in mind.
There are a couple of themes that I think would work well. First, Japan has always had competitive female golfers on tour. Miyazaki Ai was the first to develop a widespread following, but lately Hataoka Nasa has become a force on the LPGA Tour. (Yes, she's named after the US space agency because her mom was a fan of space exploration.) It's also not hard to imagine some yuri potential in a story about female golfers on tour. And a lot of material about friendships as well. Finally, there's the nationalism aspect of all this. Korea has displaced the US in the number of quality female golfers It has produced in the years since Se Ri Park won the 1998 US Womens' Open in a famous 20-hole playoff against American amateur Jenny Chuasiriporn. There would be lots of room for some Korea vs Japan tensions. |
