I really have to wonder if the Eng dub loving part of the fan base is enough to carry HIDIVE tbh. I predominantly choose JP dubs, though there are plenty of EN dubs I've ended up enjoying more than the original. There's even a few Sentai dubs in that mix too. But on the whole compared to FUNimation their quality seems to be wildly inconsistent and most performances end up feeling pretty phoned in.

I was wondering the same thing. I hope whatever Sentai got out of this arrangement was worth it because I've already been seeing a number of comments along the lines of cancelling HIDive subscriptions or waiting to see what they do next season before subscribing. It's hard not to see their point. Sentai has been at least experimenting with their Dubcasts, but I don't know if that would be enough to keep that service going. Release the Spyce had an odd schedule where they would release the dub in four episode batches once a month, which seems like an easy way for people to forget about it. Plus, Funimation was already doing a lot of simuldubs before the partnership with CR, so people subscribing for those could simply stick around. Sentai is/was still more or less experimenting with it and only doing a couple shows at a time. It's harder to see that as enough to justify a subscription, even if it is fairly cheap. Personally, I'm waiting to see what happens, at least for a bit, before I decide if I keep my HiDive subscription. I got in when it was still priced at their cheaper rate mostly because they also announced dubcasts at the time. However, if they don't end up doing much with that, I don't have a whole lot of reason to stick around. |

Sentai and HIDIVE are supposed to be separate companies. HIDIVE is the one that should worry about losing subscriptions because of Crunchyroll. But then again, HIDIVE is surely benefiting by being on VRV. As long as one streaming service is giving good money to Sentai, they should be fine. |

It sure does feel like we're seeing a Crunchydive partnership in all but an official announcement... but I'm not very approving.
Here's the thing: I get what both companies are going for, but in this age of streaming services getting bought out by ever-larger companies, this isn't the right approach. The reason Funiroll collapsed was because one of the parties got bought out by a large corporation (Sony). What's stopping the same thing from happening to Sentai and/or HIDIVE (depending on if they're different companies)? I could see someone like Comcast or Viacom swallowing Sentai to get a major piece of the anime game. This might be controversial, but I think the solution is for Ellation Media to get ahead of potential competitors and purchase Sentai outright. They could either shut down HIDIVE or refocus it into a service meant for dubs. The move also means Crunchyroll would have a dedicated home video arm without needing to start their own or outsource work to other companies, plus a place for dubs they can use without having to rely on California-based studios, which I think are both things they've needed for a while. What does everyone else think? |

Luckily for HIDIVE, Crunchyroll just updated their XBox player to remove such useless features as seeking, fastforward, or any kind of video control besides +/- 30 seconds. So I'm sticking with HIDIVE for now, if only for the player.

But Sentai and HIDIVE have the same president (John Ledford) http://www.linkedin.com/in/john-ledford-2892598/ |

It will be interesting to see what happens to HIDIVE in the next few months. I can understand having HIDIVE as part of the VRV bundle but selling almost all of the HIDIVE simulcasts to Crunchyroll is a baffling decision since it reduces the incentive to be a HIDIVE subscriber. If Sentai was planning to market HIDIVE as a complementary service I think they would have announced dubcasts at the same time that they made this announcement.

Since we don't know the specifics of the deal between Sentai and Crunchyroll we cannot tell if this is good for Sentai or not. It is quite possible that Sentai will get more revenue from Crunchyroll (and more information as to popularity) then keeping these shows exclusive to HIDIVE. It is not impossible that HIDIVE is a money losing operation that they wish to close eventually.

If Sentai really wanted give their series to Crunchyroll to stream, they would have already done it; Crunchyroll was open to stream almost everything (Crunchyroll was also always much more popular that HIDIVE). Sentai may gets something very good in return , but it wouldn't be only about money. (Crunchyroll would not spend money as crazy as what Amazon did.) |

@Johnamine
By giving many of their shows to Crunchyroll, Sentai appears to be stabbing Hidive in the back. Since, as you noted above, Sentai and Hidive are controlled by the same people it would appear that something is going on that we are not aware of. In spite of the decisions that caused the fall of ADV, I don't thing the people running Sentai are incompetent. Therefore I have to assume that there are factors that have not been revealed (and probably will not). Even if Crunchyroll is only paying a small amount for these shows, it still may be more than they are getting net from Hidive. At this time there is no way to tell. Basically if a company does something you don't understand, it may be because you don't have all the facts, or it may be that they made a mistake. You can't assume either unless you have all the facts. |
