Thank god. If they were to get acquired, then Walmart (in my opinion) would be a much better suitor, because at least they know retail - especially video game retail. Being bought out by a private equity firm or hedge fund would just put them in even more financial doo doo than they are now and eventually put them out of business, just look at what happened with Toys "R" Us.

How ironic. Game Stop didn't like offers available to them.

Translation from cowardly corporate speak: "There isn't money good enough to buy us out".

No, they are saying that because no one is willing to lend them enough money it scared off potential buyers.

Honestly does anyone really shop at Gamestop anymore?
I used to stop in frequently, and honestly I can't remember buying anything from them in more then a year.

For many, GameStop is really the closest (if only) option for buying video games locally. Personally, I have a few GameStops within a radius of a few miles I frequent fairly often, plus another two or three I visit on rare occasion that are a little further out, and that's mainly because I don't have any other choice for video games. If I want to go retro game hunting, or simply go to an independently run store, then I have to take at least a 20-30 minute drive to get to the closest one that's actually any good, while my all-time favorite retro store (Digital Press) is just shy of an hour drive, so I only go to it rarely. Anything else in my area has either died out years ago or is run by overpriced scam artists that aren't even worth a glance.
Honestly, I'd love for there to be another option for me, & I'm sure that others are in the same boat as me, but GameStop is the only option we usually have. Luckily, the ones in my area are generally run by good people, so my experiences are normally enjoyable.

All the potential buyers would only offer them a $5 gift card

As someone who still only buys video games physically, Gamestop is an invaluable resource. Department stores like Walmart and Target only sell the latest games and don't have nearly as large of a selection as Gamestop does. The Wii shop shutting down is another reminder why you shouldn't rely solely on digital purchases of video games if you want to always be able to play your favorite video games.

I still don't buy it.. no pun intended.
I buy just about everything non digital and I still don't goto Gamestop. Most of my avenues are internet based, better pricing, and less of a hassle in general.
Gamestop has bad sales practices, no customer service, and generally is not consumer friendly on trades or pricing. so let me modify my original question.. Why does anyone still shop at Gamestop?

Because not everyone buys online and people want to support brick and mortar stores. If you prefer buying online, that's good for you, but you should not assume everyone on the planet thinks like you or that we should all think like you do.

Last time I went into Game Stop half their store was dedicated to merch like Funko Pops.
They should probably sell before they become even more irrelevent.

Buying and downloading games online is not that good either, especially when your internet connection goes out. I go physical.

Walmart acquiring them would be funny simply because like GameStop they have a a well known hatedom. As for knowing them knowing more about video game retail I've never really heard anyone make that argument.

Maybe that's been your experience, but for us, every time we've gone into Gamestop (which is usually 1-3 times a month) we've had amazing experiences with them. We're on friendly terms with the managers and associates in all 3 stores we go to, and they've always been helpful and fair to us. Yes, there's several times we go in and we don't find something we want, but honestly that's mostly on my husband and how picky he is. I can agree that trade ins can be a bit off-putting, but we both refuse to try and sell online, and if we don't get a good enough offer, there's a local gaming store we also try or we go to Half Price Books (which probably isn't much better). Not everything is reasonably priced - especially compared to online - but we have terrible luck when we have bought games online because my husband wants physical copies of everything with the official art (he refuses to buy or play games online, and even if he did kinda want to, we don't have the best connection, so he'll only connect it sparingly for updates). Not to mention he prefers being able to actually see the condition of the discs and art, which you can't do that online. Seeing a picture and reading a description isn't always enough; we recently bought a game that we were told and looked like it was in "good" condition, but it really wasn't. But it wasn't worth fighting and doing a $10 claim for it, either, so we just have it and hopefully one day he can replace it with a better copy.
We're big fans of Gamestop, and we hope they'll try and stick around for a very long time still. It'd be nice when we do finally have kids if we could be able to take them to a Gamestop and see their awe over seeing all of the games. Since we can't do that with Toys R Us anymore, we can still hope for this. We're probably old school (we actually have a family joke for the husband of "get with the times, old man" because of how much he hates everything being so technology and internet forward), but we love physical brick-and-mortar stores, and Gamestop is one of our most favorite stores. I'm sorry that, for you and certainly others, you've had bad experiences, but that's not going to be the same for everyone.
