Well Christmas seems to have passed a select few of us. The family is up in California while I, sadly, had to stay behind to take care of employees who are well...not around. In any case the gift giving/recieving aspect of Christmas has been put on hiatus. However I was given a nice check from my aunt, which made me think it would be nice to just splurge it at Best Buy. I'm rather tight with my wallet so this a big thing for me, so while some titles on the shelf are sure buys for me there are some I'm teeter tottering on. After a long dry spell in the DVD market (nothing interested me) suddenly many titles have sprung up that have caught my interest. So now I turn to the users of ANN to help me choose a nice title or two that I may have missed or is a sweet little gem that I oughta support.

These are the definites on the list:

GaoGaiGar: The collector's box along with volume 2.
Nerima Daikon Brothers
Rumbling Hearts (I don't know why I liked the first episode, especially after all of the negative comments that I've been seeing on the forum recently but this is certainly one I want to pick up)

Now there are a few titles I'm spotting but I'm not sure. I have room for either a couple of complete collections or investments. Let's bring on the contenders.

Elfen Lied Complete Box: This thinpack is just downright pretty. Much more attractive than the initial boxset that was released. I've heard nothing but great things about this series, I saw the first DVD a while back and as disturbing as a cute limbless schoolgirl can be I still enjoyed it. It's probably one worth finishing. However will I be missing out on any extras that came with the original release? Also the price tag of roughly $50.00 basically nerfs the double title potential.

My-Hime: Do I really want to invest in this? My understanding is that for those who enjoyed both Ikki Tousen and Tenjho Tenge (of which I liked both), My-Hime is right up their alley. What detracts me from this series though is from what I understand an incredibly sub-par sequel, and another sequel which recently came out. So if I'm to understand this properly that's at least 78 episodes of schoolgirls fighting. Do I really want that much of it? Also based on the AMV I saw of Mai-Otome it just looked ridiculous to the point where it almost killed any potential interest in the series at the time.

Kiddy Grade: From what I understand the series matures and gets much better as it goes on, and while I have an interest (damn you Kaiyodo) it still does not come off as being distinctive to me.

Shakugan no Shana: It's amazing what pretty packaging can do. I've heard this series is a nice spin/parody of the magical girl genre. To be honest I know nothing about the title, yet whenever I browse the shelves I always find myself staring at the DVD covers and I can't help but wonder about it.

Upon writing this I realize many other titles escape me. I guess it's because the ones I'm considering are complete collections of shows/movies I simply would love to have on my shelf. Those include the Outlaw Star colleciton, both Lupin movie packs, Ninja Scroll 10th Anniversary (why in God's name do I STILL not own this?), and the re-release of the Street Fighter animated movie (it was damn good despite being based on the game series, and even then I firmly believe this movie can stand on it's own even without the backing of the franchise). I think I've been a member long enough to where people on this board know my tastes/opinions, and while I know those listed in the last paragraph are titles I will definitley enjoy I feel like taking a bit of a chance/gamble with something new. So bring on the suggestions.

Edit: I forgot to ask this. Today when I did my window shopping I noticed Eureka 7 had 3 or 4 different collector's boxes. What's the deal with that? Is it just to appeal to different tastes? It's just something I've never seen before, is there any difference between them?

Buying My-Hime won't lock you into an obligation to commit to Mai-Otome at all because Mai-Otome isn't really a sequel to My-Hime. Some characters have the same names and/or appearances as the characters in My-Hime, but often with different personalities. The stories are also completely unrelated. I'm also not sure that I would compare My-Hime too closely with shows like Tenjho Tenge. Certainly they're fighting shows with large casts, but My-Hime doesn't place much emphasis on the fighting, but just as much as its a necessary part of the story. The little I've seen of Tenjho Tenge suggests that it's more about fighting and fanservice than the actual story.

The Elfen Lied pack is definately worth it, I got the thinkpack on its' release day and I havn't regretted it one bit. The story just get's better from what you've seen. As for extras that you don't get that would be production art and character gallery, a clean opening and closing animation. But you retain the ADV previews Wink I've seen it for as low as $30 at b&m stores, so shop around. As for the Eureka 7 boxes, each one contains a different manga volume and shirt, and the first box includes a double cd ost as well. At this point I'm trying to figure out what to do with all my E7 special edition boxes. There's so many!

Well, not 78 episodes... only 50 something since Mai Otome Zwei isn't a full length series and just an OVA... Other than that, I can't say much on Tenjho Tenge, but My-HiME is nothing like Ikki Tousen. At least in the execution. I suppose they have some similar basic "fighting girls" themes, but other than that I really can't seem to see the similarity at all... Unless you've only seen like 2 episodes of My-HiME, I can see somebody making a connection then. Don't know who told you it was similar, but it must have been someone who hadn't seen that much of it...

Once I got past the halfway point of My-HiME it completely blew me away though. Not to say the first half wasn't good, it was entertaining, and it felt necessariy in order to build up the story and chracters a bit before they went all out. While there is a lot of fighting in My-HiME too, theres a whole lot of comedy and drama in there too. And while there's fanservice, 90% of it is in the first 5 episodes. After that, for the most part there isn't anymore.

Also, while most people for some reason seem to dislike My Otome, I personally really liked it. Just like My HiME, it took time for it to build up...

Kiddy Grade has a very interesting premise. The plot really starts to develop once you get past the introductory episodes. The middle episodes are definitely the best. It's a good sci-fi, action, girls-kicking-butt series.

Trance is My-Hime hands down!

I LOVE this series. I enjoy the animation and the music but I especially love the characters. Mai Tokiha is just wonderful! I can so understand where she is coming from spoiler[even though I still have my parents and no siblings]. There are several twists and turns and I'm very much looking forward to how this ends. Oh, and after the end credits of each episode, there are shorts that give you some insight to several of the characters.

BTW - Don't EVEN compare My-Hime to Tenjho Tenge and Ikki Tousen! Evil or Very Mad **growl!** Neither are anywhere near M-H's league.
