Why would they go for more detailed lighting/shading and still keep the low FPS? It looks even laggier this way.

Crappy 3d cg, but what else can you expect from Netflix? Like 95% of there anime are c crap shows. There grabbing all this crappy cg shows because there cheap and affordable. Shows how little they care about anime.

Well, so much for me being the first person to chime in about the craptacular 3DCG; couldn't even make it through the trailer.

Maybe I will give this series a try but I'm worried if I need to have some familiarity with the Ultraman franchise in order to understand the show better.

Dammit, dammit. This is Production IG. Why did they go this route?
And the manga is good to boot.

Why are so many people surprised that it is CGI, it was announced almost a year ago that it would be. Also if you missed that announcement Sola Digital Arts should have given it away. Anyways I think the CGI looks good.

I've been reading the manga without any prior knowledge of the series. I'm sure familiarity with the franchise would add to the experience, but It's not necessary to understand or enjoy the story (which reads like Men in Black meets Spider-Man, and is really fun!)

Honestly, given that "SSSS Gridman" has a lot of "Ultra" franchise references, I think it would have made sense if Funi picked this series up.

Gridman has been great so far.
