Nitpicking here because I love music too much but
is not a factual statement. Shinkichi Mitsumune composed a number of tracks for the soundtrack(s). The interview itself is fairly interesting in regards to what they had to say. I'm sure it's needless to say that I'm really glad they decided to take that opportunity to have their music in the anime. I would've discovered them eventually, but I'm really glad FLCL helped me discover them earlier than I would've on my own. I always love hearing about how a composer/writer thinks about when they create their music. I wish they did more in-depth questions about the music itself. Manabe is one of my favorite guitarists ever. I really wish he had more to say during this interview. There's a few good videos on youtube with him doing/saying interesting things, at least. I'm still really iffy about this new anime. I have no doubt "the pillows" music will be fantastic, but outside of that it still just feels like an "official fanfic", like the awful new Star Wars movies. It's hard to have faith in something when the most important creators of the original are not involved. More nitpick stuff: Subtitles should respect Japanese naming order. Really peeves me how barely any subs do so. In Japan, they call Samuel L. Jackson exactly that, and not Jackson L. Samuel. They respect our naming order, we should respect theirs. Also, it's just frustrating to read "Shinichiro Sato" while hearing "Sato Shinichiro". Localizations should reverse the names in dubs, but respect them in subs. Video quality is pretty garbage on this interview. I'm just gonna assume Adult Swim either has terrible editors or is recording this on a phone. Or both. |

Okay, now I know you’re doing this on purpose as I’ve mentioned this to you a few times before. The original director is supervising this whole project. How in the world is that not involving “the most important creators of the original”? I don’t care how you feel it may or may not turn out before the premiere, but don’t let it prevent you from acknowledging this. Just wanted to chime in and say this is something that bugs me too. I'm not sure why when subtitling for anime company's refuse to do this. I end up having to manually reverse the order when I read subtitles as it just irks seeing it written how it's said. As for the Pillows interview, that's cool for them I guess... |

Hmm, that's an interesting take. I always had the impression that most Japanese bands work for their record labels and are all about attaching themselves to other things, way more so than western record labels do. How common is this aversion to what they refer to as selling out? I've always regarded that as more of a western music thing, considering rebelliousness doesn't seem to be quite as strong in Japan as it is in the Americas or Europe, including in their music.
Hey now, I like the new Star Wars movies... In any case, that's pretty much the nature of a franchise. Stuff like Batman, Saturday Night Live, James Bond 007, and Doctor Who can keep on running for decades and decades with no end in sight because, simply put, there are always new people who will take these franchises in new directions, and not necessarily in a bad way, after the original crew has split up and/or passed away. In all four of these cases, the most well-regarded parts of them are not the beginning, and that's the hard truth: Sometimes, the people taking over a franchise turn out to do it better than the original people. For something like Star Wars, which hadn't had any movies in quite some time, the original trilogy being considered a perfect classic, and a very contested prequel trilogy, it's a LOT harder to please people. So far, though, the movies have been turning in a profit--if people were that disappointed in The Force Awakens or even Rogue One, the box office numbers would have decreased sharply by the releases of The Last Jedi or Solo (which is what happened to The Smurfs 2, Chipwrecked, and Prince Caspian--and while I know the box office returns for Solo aren't as strong as the other three, Disney is still predicting a profit, and it's more well-liked by Star Wars fans than The Last Jedi). It's not like Japan is a stranger to this sort of thing either. After all, Doraemon, Cyborg 009, Anpanman, and GeGeGe no Kitaro continue to have works in production long after their creators have died. |

I understand where you're coming from, but this request is so weeaboo it hurts. Good thing you called it a nitpick beforehand. |

Yeah, i get the whole name order thing, but at least for this video, I thik they were at least trying to make it accessible to anyone who wasn't too deep into anime outside of FLCL.
Also, well looks like they made the official (the unofficially announced this at Momocon last weekend) announcement that they will be doing a limited city tour this summer. I would see them if they come to my city, but I doubt they would come to Atlanta. source: https://twitter.com/FLCL_USA |
