I'm the translator, and I'd just like to say that I like this review for the most part, but there are a few issues I have here. Firstly, the French is proper for what it was trying to go for. It's a direct reference to Dante's "Inferno", and the famous sculpture based on it by Auguste Rodin. (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Porte_de_l%27Enfer). Therefore I wouldn't call this a mistake, since it's a particular reference.

Secondly, in regards to the use of the word "retard" and "retarded", I will stand by my usage of these offensive words because in context they are meant to come off as insensitive and offensive. The fact that you seem troubled with the fact that the words are being used actually means I'm doing my job right. Franklin is crass and uncaring even in the original Japanese, so transmitting his unpleasant nature in English is my priority. You'll do well to note that the only characters who have used such terms are characters who are not meant to be immediately sympathetic in the narrative.

Otherwise I enjoyed the review, hope you like the next couple volumes.

Man, Infinite Dendrogram is such a good series. I would be much more interested in an anime adaptation of a VRMMO sci-fi like this than something like SAO, but oh well.
Volume 6 concludes tomorrow and I can't wait!

Thanks for responding, Distant Valhalla!

Translating really is more art than science in my experience, so I really do appreciate what you're doing. (I once had to translate a wedding from English to French right next to the pastors - not a fun time.) As a teacher, I know I get more hyper about word choice than some other people, so I cede the point about "retarded" - in retrospect, it does make sense for Franklin; I'm just super aware of it as a slur.

And with M. Rodin, I stand corrected. Smile

No worries! I understand how the word can be perceived so it's an understandable concern, I'm glad that the novel's being enjoyed otherwise, it's really fun to work on.

Honestly, this series has restored my faith in VRMMO-set stories. I haven't enjoyed one this much since I read Vivian Vande Velde's Deadly Pink and Heir Apparent back in the day!

Infinite Dendrogram is a wonderful series that i'd recommend to anyone. I can't believe i didn't catch the "Holmes" and "Adler" reference!!! I'm even watching through Elementary right now, i don't know how i missed that...

Nice review; i also appreciated the short stories at the end of volume 3. It speaks well to the author that i'm interested in the side quests of these other characters.

I've started reading Infinite Dendrogram since I saw the first book (and second?) review here. Oh man, it's so good and interesting! I have no regrets! I finished 5 volumes in a week plus one day (can be done in 5 days, but I stalled the last ones because I don't want to part with it). It's really is an amazing story, from the plot, characters, and artworks...I really love it. I'm recommending it to my friends.

I'm happy to see other people enjoying it as well. It deserves praise.

I didn't quite enjoy volumes 3 & 4 as I did with volumes 1 & 2 since the conflict in these two books really feels drawn out. But I agree that it's a fun read. Once you get into it, Dendoro is really enjoyable. The comedy is pretty funny too.
