what i wouldn't give to live in a world where anime bloggers don't feel the need to compare every single magical girl show to madoka

I was curious about this one; if the show's that good, then i'll certainly check it out streaming, at least. I have to wonder if a "clean ending" is really something to complain about tho; it seems like most anime don't bother to have a real conclusion at all.

Since Madoka is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of this century, comparisons to other magical girl series that have darker elements are inevitable, even if only as a frame of reference.

it's still irritating, regardless of how inevitable it is, especially considering that the director himself has said he considers the show less a magical girl story and more a dark fantasy tale that has magical girl trappings
the amount of shows that actually make an effort to copycat madoka are vastly outweighed by shows just actually being magical girl shows and it's both frustrating and unhelpful to see this dead horse comparison dragged out again and again -- even more so for a show that predates Madoka significantly!
it's already up there with IT'S THE DARK SOULS OF X, honestly

Oh man, this brings back memories. This was probably one of the first non-Toonami anime series I saw. I didn't realize this had gotten a new release, so I'm definitely gonna have to pick this up.

Man I love this show picked up at the library and fell in love. The Madoka points are good because the way the plot goes is like madoka in some ways also Yuki Kajiura is on music so there is that. Any way still have the old LE Bandai put out will get this at some point

That's pretty funny considering Hisayuki is 2nd in the same-face department after Hirai.
But yeah, I also saw this pretty early in my anime watching career so stuff like the dark twist and surprise sexuality reveals stood out at the time. It's pretty old hat these days but still noteworthy for doing it first. I haven't watched it in a long while because I bought the Anime Legend Box set and it's really hard getting the discs out without breaking them (already cracked the one).
Sadly it's fandom can be exceptionally toxic and that's soured my opinion over the years. Heaven forbid you ever say anything positive about Yuuichi, or say that Mai/Mikoto isn't the true canon pairing. You'll be burnt at the stake.
The worst part is probably how worshipped Shizuru is. People just ignore the fact that she raped Natsuki and got away with it.
Honestly I like the manga version much more than the anime. I like Otome anime more than HiME too, but the Otome manga is definitely the best installment of the franchise. Shame it's the only one that never got an English release

which is why there is card captor sakura: clear card arc since its pretty much the overall popular magical girl series long before mai hime was released in the 2005. while it ain't as dark as madoka magica, its definitely more well known and the pinnacle of the genre.
Quote: | The story covers three arcs over its 26-episode run: an introductory part that establishes the cast and initial premise, a middle part that focuses on the activities of the Searrs Foundation, and a final part that delves into the truth behind the HiME. Not everything is fully explained, but enough comes together to mostly make sense of the big picture. |
which is why there was the manga that was released afterward which filled some of the blanks.
though it wasn't very well received cause it changed some of the elements of the anime completely. specifically the relationship between mai , tate and natsuki when fans of the anime was heavily shipping her and shizuru as a next lesbian couple since the days of haruka and michiru. having natsuki be a love rival for mai definitely pissed off a lot of people. i remembered an ANN reviewer gave one of the volumes an F- because of how 180 the storyline is. while i definitely enjoyed it, i am definitely in the minority for this circumstances. but it does fill in some of the blanks from the anime, which should be a plus, right?!

Even if the manga did fill in blanks it doesn't necessarily apply to the anime, since the two are completely separate stories with their own set of rules.

I'd need to re watch it since its being more than a decade at this point, but I mostly remember the show as being a giant mess with some pretty crazy tone whiplash but cool imagery.
I also remember thinking the black haired wild girl was sorta pointless in the story, like she was just thrown in at the last minute and her supposed romantic relationship with the main character felt really forced.

Makoto was pointless? All the characters had some semblance of what love is or, more importantly, what they wanted it to be and the plot moved at their whim and convulsed when their ideas of love clashed. Usually violently, always entertainingly.
Makoto didn't work under such delusions; She knew her sword and her quest to find her brother... she later added Mai's cooking and eventually her friends to her "likes" list. These are the things she lived for but her friends berated her because they're not things they would consider "loves".
There are several heartrending scenes of Makoto trying to align her perceptions with their values, my favorite being the omake where she thinks of her former school life with Mai's food like a first love that never came to be.. Makoto's very simple but simple isn't the same as stupid.
Great series, great release even if I think it took a little too long to get it rereleased.

A character doesn't have to be ethical to be likable.
