Always feels weird when something like the oldest piece of human literature becomes relevant due to some piece of pop fiction. Besides that, those are some odd questions. Sounds more like something out of a trivia show than some entrance exam.

I think calling it a reference to FGO is some massive reaching. The Iliad is a FGO reference because there is an item? Seriously? Or Arthur? An incredibly famous myth that has been around for hundreds of years is a reference to FGO? Arthur and Excalibur have been pretty well known in Japan long before Fate. And Rama being in there next to Arthur, well the epic he is from is incredibly well known in Asia (even if I never heard of it here until FGO). So they basically pulled some of the biggest possible non-East-Asian myths for that.
Fate is basically a collection of historical myths and facts (with a twist) so every time any of those things gets mentioned, it is a reference to FGO? It isn't a coincidence that Fate incorporated some of the most famous stories from around the world. That is the entire point. You would have a hard time fielding some answers that I couldn't somehow link to Fate that weren't so incredibly obscure nobody taking the test would know it.
That isn't what 'references' means. You're completely reversing the meaning. Fate references those works. Making a reference to those works doesn't somehow mean there is a reference to Fate.
So is there an actual reason for saying these are FGO references? Or is this just some massive BS?

Ditto. It would have been better if the article was just about the Moomins question, as that has real relevance and is a bit controversial in how they handled the answer choices. The questions about King Arthur and the Iliad however are normal questions that students around the world would receive, and it's highly unlikely they were included just because of FGO.

I think it's a bit suspicious that such disparate myths were referenced in the same test, especially with the Moomin question in a different section. Definitely worth investigating the way this test was put together.

I think you really aren't aware of how big fate is in Japan
..and that the article is reporting on an issue that's been talked about in Japan itself..not just being like "oh..we noticed a 'coincidence' here"
Those choices are way to specific

Or, considering it's Japan, if you get the game and anime references WRONG, they consider you've actually worked and studied, and it's safe to accept you.

In the world of sophisticated smartphone games, absolutely, but it's not something everybody can recognize and point out the characters in ads on the subway walls. Moomin has however, always been big in Japan as one of the most recognizable foreign animation next to Disney.
It indeed is no coincidence. The test drafters clearly understand what kids are doing with their time when not studying for conventional academics. So not only is the exam testing a student's understanding of history and folklore, but also if they're entertainment savvy and awareness, because the answers to select from jog the memory of somebody falling in the latter.

the complains about "overreaching" remind me of the complains on jojo music references "ah, of course the rat is not a reference to the music group rat, that's overreaching"...then the rat stand is a song by rat.

Was there any reason to write a clickbait title? There's nothing about an actual FGO reference.
Damn shame.

^ I agree. There wasn't an actual F/GO mention. Just a coincidence really.
