This is going to confuse people in Japan. Wonder how it will affect other territories that publish the manga and don't use Viz's naming scheme, like France.

Well, so much for honoring the source material. This doesn't seem like a wise move.

Technically they are. This is an American movie based on the American version of the franchise, so they're not going to try to pass this off as Gunnm. That would be disrespectful towards the mangaka and OVA staff. Japan did the same thing with the dubs for American Ghost in the Shell movie and various Voltron works. A bit different, but they also didn't try to turn the Power Rangers movie into some Zyuranger thing.

The only examples I can think of of Japan actually using the Japanese names in the Japanese dub of an American work based on a Japanese franchise is the animated Astro Boy movie and some dubs of various American Transformers cartoons.

I haven't checked into Dragonball Evolution, Speed Racer or Death Note's Japanese dubs myself, though.

Off the top of my head, Edge of Tomorrow was changed into (or "back to") "All You Need is Kill" in Japan, even though the characters and setting was not the same as the original novel.

Wow, THAT looks horendous... Then again, I hated Avatar, so I don't know how I could like this, especially since I've been a huge GUNNM fan since my early teenage years, when the manga was released and pretty popular in France.

Americanized for your protection.....yeesh.

Some serious liberties have been made with this film from the look of it.
It does look like they see best wider spread of revenue coming form the franchise's international name (Alita Battle Angle) vs her original name. Frankly, i do find the American name better than Gunnm, but beside the fact.

Sadly, Japan a fish in a bigger pond. There wider spread who got used to the Americanized name.

Well yes 銃夢 Ganmu/Gunnm is Americanized, you do realize most of the story will take place in a futuristic America AS it was in the manga.

You meant to say Gally is "her original name",Gunnm is the Japanese title of the manga.

Speed Racer's Japanese dub used the American names for the characters and didn't seem to acknowledge the original Mach GoGoGo (マッハGoGoGo). The film's title in Japan is just the English name rendered in katakana.

Regarding Dragonball Evolution, the Japanese Wikipedia page lists the original kanji names being used for the characters. I haven't watched the dub myself, though.

I am somehow reminded of the naming convention for Super Mario Brothers USA here. Perhaps it is in their best commercial interests to present this as a thoroughly westernised product, rather than an addition to the domestic franchise.
